Chapter 202 Cooperation

After Lin Qi and Jobs blew each other in business, their friendship quickly heated up.

Of course, both of them are businessmen, so it is impossible to waste time on the sidelines. They will soon get to the point and are both the cooperation area between the two companies.

cd-rom!

This technology that can change the gaming and computer industries will see its potential and value as long as the industry insiders are not too stupid!

Now CD-ROM and core patents are in the hands of Xinfei Electronics, a joint venture established by Xinfei Electronics and Philips.

Xinfei Electronic Technology Company has not been established for a long time and is very dedicated in its business. It has built a huge moat around technologies related to CD. Even Philips Company currently holds basic patents in CD, but it is not as good as Xinfei Electronic Technology Company.

As time goes by, Xinfei Electronic Technology Company will definitely have greater and greater influence in the whole world!

"CD is a great technology that changes the way humans store. Of course, I didn't realize it's great at first!" Jobs gushed. "I didn't fully understand the meaning of it when it was used to store music records. Until your Pangu host started using it to store program programs, up to 600mb programs, I knew - fucking floppy disk, with CD CDs of more than 600mb size, who still uses 2.88mb floppy disks!"

Lin Qi nodded and said, "Yes! Although the speed of the optical drive to read information is indeed slower than other storage. However, the capacity is overwhelming. If a floppy disk of 2.88mb is to transfer 600mb information to the computer, it will have to replace the floppy disk at least 20 times. However, the CD only needs one, and this process is much more convenient and efficient than the floppy disk. More importantly, the hard disk is very expensive now. If you want to run a 600mb program with a hard disk, you can add at least five or six thousand dollars to buy a hard disk. However, the CD is very cheap. The software burned in the CD is priced at a few dozen dollars, and the CD only costs 300 dollars!"

Currently, the world's most advanced mainframe hard disk has a capacity of only 1.27gb, and the price is more than 15,000 US dollars. How heavy is it? It is at least as heavy as forty or fifty kilograms! Ordinary people feel it is difficult to carry one piece. If you can carry two pieces, you must be a Hercules!

And a CD is as high as more than 600 mb. It is conceivable how amazing this data was in this era!

What's wrong with reading speeds a little slower than hard drives, the key is large capacity and cheapness!

This is the choice of SSDs and mechanical hard drives in the future market. The price of a 120gb SSD is similar to that of ITB mechanical hard drives. Which one do you choose? A fast SSD cannot install much data. Therefore, most people still choose a slow but larger mechanical hard drive!

"That's right!" Jobs agreed deeply, "Although the combination of optical drives and optical disks can make a personal computer go from running programs of several mbs in one go to a program that can run as large as hundreds of mbs, which can replace most small machines! I plan to launch a new generation of computers that adopt your company's new optical drive system."

"In fact, our CPU chips are also very powerful, several times stronger than the current 286 chips and 68,000 chips, and the price is also very cheap. You can even buy a CPU with 5 million floating point calculations per second for only $100, which is enough to kill many small machines in seconds!" Lin Qi of course hopes that more manufacturers will use chips with xrm architecture. On the one hand, they will enhance the market share of the xrm camp and improve the software and hardware compatibility issues of the entire camp. In addition, the chip production cost is relatively expensive. If you can export some chips and make some profits, it will also help improve the financial status of the chip factory.

Jobs shook his head and said, "Performance is not the most important thing. We have suffered a great loss on the 6502 chip. If we can do it again, we will not choose 6502, but will directly choose Intel or Motorola products!"

Lin Qi is unreasonable. You should know that without the 6502 chip of Mos Technology, the CPU prices of Motorola and Intel will be even more expensive. Even now, Intel's 286cpu price is between 200 and 300 US dollars, and the 68000, the founder of Motorola's 680x0 architecture processor, is more expensive because it is stronger than 286 in terms of performance, and the market price is more than 350 US dollars per machine!

In theory, Motorola's 680 architecture chip is not behind Intel's x86 architecture. In terms of process, Motorola is not inferior to Intel. Unfortunately, Motorola is a competitor of ibm in many businesses, so when ibm launched the PC, it even considered the 6502 chip. Before choosing Intel's chip, ibm had negotiated with Atari to purchase the patent ownership of the microcomputer developed by Atari, and hoped that Atari would manufacture microcomputers for ibm, but the arrogant Atari firmly rejected ibm's olive branch.

It is precisely for this reason that the x86 chip now has become the royal chip of the PC camp. As a competitor of the PC camp, unless Jobs surrenders and transforms to produce PC-compatible machines, he will definitely not use x86 chips!

For Jobs, the best choice is Motorola. Because the founder of Mos Technology was originally an engineer at Motorola. Although the 6502 architecture chip is not the same as the 680*0 architecture chip, at least there is something in common.

To talk about the powerful chip performance, the mc68000 chip is indeed relatively strong. It is a chip with 68,000 transistors, which is also the source of its name. At the same time, the mc68000 chip has 32-bit registers inside, but for compatibility, it uses a 16-bit (and 24-bit) data cable. Simply put, it is a quasi-32-bit processor, which is castrated into a 16-bit chip for sale. Therefore, its future technology upgrade is guaranteed, and according to its architecture, it can be upgraded to 32-bit soon.

In fact, before Apple adopted the 68,000 chip, the main buyer of this chip was the arcade department of Xinxin Entrepreneur Electronics. To date, the arcade department of Xinxin Entrepreneur Electronics has half of the arcade game chips used for 68,000.

Of course, after the mass production of xrm16 chips developed by Xinxing Electronics Company, the new arcade games will also use xrm16 chips in a unified manner. Moreover, the game base version of the Xinxing Electronics arcade department in the past was a bit chaotic, and the company had about 10 incompatible arcade substrates. Each popular game will be out of the way, even one game and one base version, and did not consider using a common motherboard platform with other arcade machines.

Now it is different. The arcade market also requires the production of a compatible arcade motherboard. After that, the newly developed arcade does not need to design hardware from scratch, but only rely on designing game software. This approach gradually allowed the research and development of the arcade department to advance from the era of handicraft workshops to the era of large-scale industrialization.

Although Lin Qi kept introducing to Jobs that streamlining instruction sets are better than complex instruction sets, mc68000 is neither expensive nor too leading chip, and it is definitely not as good as xrm16!

However, Jobs shook his head repeatedly, and would rather have a worse performance and more expensive mc68000 than a high performance and low price xrm16! He had suffered losses on the 6502 chip, but he didn't want to suffer losses again!

If Mos Technology Company was a little more successful and launched a 16-bit chip in the early 1980s, even if the performance was slightly inferior to the 286 and mc68000, Apple would definitely continue to use chips of this architecture. Unfortunately, Mos Technology Company itself was not successful and also dragged down several of its major customers.

Of course, the prospects for the cooperation between CD optical drives and CDs are also very broad. Xinfei Electronics provides Apple with 500,000 optical drives, at a price of 300 US dollars per unit. In addition, it sells 10 million blank CDs to Apple at a price of 0.5 US dollars per unit.

The first order price was as high as US$20 million. And after the contract was reached, Jobs immediately paid a deposit of US$2 million.

Some of this batch of optical drives are ready to be upgraded to Appleii users. After all, it is a kind of sincerity to have a large number of Appleii users in the market.

In addition, Lisa's computer is also preparing to use an external optical drive to bring users a stronger experience. After all, the computer itself is equipped with 2mb of memory. Since many programs now have only a few hundred k or even dozens of k. Therefore, the 2mb memory feels overperformance, but after running a program as large as a few hundred mb, the memory can reflect its value.

As for the Macintosh computer, which is still under development, Jobs has even made a big brainstorm, canceling the floppy drive and directly changing to the optical drive.

This is more radical than Pangu console. As a game console development, Pangu console still dares not cancel traditional cassettes even if it mainly promotes optical drives. After all, many game development companies are more accustomed to developing cassette-style games. It will take time for these companies to transform and develop CD games with a capacity of hundreds of MB.

But Jobs was so radical, thinking that since CD-rom was mature enough to be available for the market, why use floppy drives?

In a sense, Jobs was much more radical than Lin Qi. Even though Lin Qi knew that the optical drive would gradually eliminate game cartridges, floppy drives, etc., he still retained the traditional game cartridges. Moreover, Pangu consoles have low-end books, only interfaces for plugging in game cartridges, but no cd-rom...

Because Lin Qi knew that any advanced thing to replace the old thing was not completed overnight, but took time.

It took ten years for optical drives to eliminate game cassettes and floppy drives in history. In the 1990s, the game market gradually became dominated by CDs and hard drives. Even the most stubborn game manufacturers, such as Nintendo, had to change their technical routes because of the situation. Floppy drives were gradually withdrawn from the data storage market in the 1990s.
