Chapter 201 Jobs

In March 1983, Lin Qi met an unexpected visitor - Jobs!

Although, after Apple went public in 1980, it has created four billionaires and more than 40 millionaires, with a market value of more than US$2 billion, and its operating income reached the top 500 standard in 1985.

But in fact, Apple is as in crisis as Atari. The old product Appleii was launched in 1977. At that time, it used a 6502 chip worth $25 per, and its performance was not outdated. However, by 1983, five years have passed. Although this CPU, which was launched in the mid-1970s, has undergone minor modifications to tap its performance potential, it is still only an 8-bit CPU.

All computer functions that use the chips provided by Mos Technology, their company's products have lagged far behind mainstream technologies in the market.

Among them, the ones who suffered the most were Atari and Apple. Strictly speaking, the early Apple computers were derived from Atari's game consoles. With the design ideas and semi-finished drawings learned by Atari, they ran out to make a computer, but as a result, they achieved achievements no less than Atari.

Atari's problem is now very serious. As the 40th employee of Atari, Jobs, naturally has a sense of crisis. Therefore, since 1981, Apple has begun to transform and try to develop a non-Mos technology 6502 computer. At the same time, they acquired unreliable low-priced chips, so they chose products from large companies. After all, compared to small companies that are not enterprising, they may spend a lifetime on a chip. Those ambitious giants will continue to invest huge amounts of money to upgrade their chip architecture and process levels based on the performance of their competitors in the market.

Historically, Apple chose Motorola's 16-bit chip and developed an Applelisa computer that was the first to use a mouse, mechanical hard disk and graphic display operating system.

At first, Applelisa planned to make a popular computer with high performance and low price, similar to PC. However, I don’t know what to think, this computer later became a high-end machine with high performance and low price.

This computer, when it was first launched, used 68,000cpu provided by Motorola, plus 2mb of memory, and a 5mb mechanical hard drive. Its price is as high as $10,000, and its high price is definitely its biggest failure.

Although this machine uses a graphics operating system, although its memory is comparable to a small computer, it is limited by the CPU performance, and the graphics operating system card is crazy.

Lisa Computer is the first failed design in Apple's history. It has been cold after it went public and has not received support from consumers and computer manufacturers.

However, Jobs resisted the opposition of shareholders and insisted on developing graphics operating system computers, while reversing the driving force back to the previous simple operating system era. The Lisa series of computers also improved technology. Starting from Lisa 2, the configuration has shrunk, and its standard large memory has been reduced from 2mb to 128k! But the price has been reduced to $3,495. Even so, Lisa computers are still hopelessly failed products.

A year later, Jobs launched the Macintosh computer again. Macintosh learned from the failure of Lisa's computer. It also has a graphical operating system interface, and the configuration is roughly the same as that of Lisa 2, but the price is reduced to $2,495 based on the Lisa 2.

The cost-effectiveness of Macintosh computers is not high. At least, it is purely hardware configuration and may not be more cost-effective than PC-compatible machines.

But the problem is that PC-compatible machines are mainly Dos systems, and the fashionable value of that kind of system cannot be compared with the graphics operating system.

As for Microsoft's graphics operating system, it did not make any efforts in this area in the 1980s, and it would not be compared with Apple's Macintosh system until at least the early 1990s.

The Macintosh system allowed Apple to develop its first batch of Apple fans because it can take you to show off.

No matter how good your PC is, the ugly Dos operating system. We have entered the era of graphics operating systems.

Even if the performance of the Macintosh computer at $2,495 may not be as good as the PC-compatible machine for $1,500. But it doesn’t matter, Apple fans are animals that recharge for faith anyway.

But unfortunately, Apple fans have always been a niche. Since the era of Macintosh computers, a large number of office computers have been occupied by the PC camp. At the same time, even for entertainment purposes, since PC users far exceed Macintosh computers, entertainment software developers represented by game manufacturers have focused more on the host platform and PC platform. There are even fewer games on the Macintosh platform.

By the 1990s, the gap between PC and Apple camp had already formed a huge gap. There were not many new program applications and games in the entire Apple camp, but there were countless new applications and games in the PC camp. In addition, the PC camp in the 1990s had gradually begun to de-dos and Windows gradually became popular.

In this way, even die-hard Apple fans have to abandon Apple computers that can hardly do anything. Even in the 1990s, the graphics operating system was still better than Windows.

In the late 1990s, Jobs returned to Apple again, and soon he felt that computers could not save Apple. So, Jobs decided to find a new market, and by starting a new market from MP3 music players to iPhones, he completely started a new market. It was equivalent to abandoning the former small foreign building based on the foundation of the old site of Apple and rebuilt a skyscraper.

"Welcome to Hong Kong, Mr. Jobs!" Although, during Lin Qi's original growth, he used PCs and Androids for computers.

After all, he is a crazy person with a price-performance ratio. When buying consumer products, the first thing he needs to do is to consider is the cost-performance ratio. In addition, it is to consider compatibility. Therefore, people like him cannot become Apple fans.

Even if he is not a fan of Apple, Lin Qi still respects the living Jobs.

For the first time, Jobs created an Apple computer with a market value of billions of dollars. Later, Apple was dying. Based on this old ship that was insolvent and bankrupt, it actually drove the ship to a new world, creating a super company with a market value of US$800 billion, breaking the highest market value record of listed companies in the world!

"Lin! I have long admired you, but unfortunately you are too low-key. You rarely accept media interviews and do not communicate with the technology industry!" Jobs smiled.

"In fact, I like to think about what products our company wants to launch from the perspective of consumers." Lin Qi said with a smile, "So, more time is spent eating, drinking and having fun. Sometimes, I watch TV, watch movies, and play games for a few hours. From the perspective of players and audiences, I make a series of requirements for the company!"

Jobs gave a thumbs up: "Originally, I told Apple employees that I would become a company like Sony, but since last year, I have repeatedly said that I would become a company like new startup electronics!"

Lin Qi felt a little embarrassed to be praised by Jobs like that.

"Of course, our time is precious. This time we came to Hong Kong, not to chat with you, but to cooperate with our two great companies!" said Jobs.
