85 The Lost Village

My mother is from Caojiawan, but her surname is not Cao. As far as I know, there are no families with the surname Cao in Caojiawan now. So, where does the name Caojiawan come from?

I asked my mother about this, but she couldn't tell me. So I later asked my grandfather and the answer was solved with my grandfather.

It is said that a long time ago, this village had a steady pace of life as usual. Sheep herding sheep, working, and cooking. Everything seemed nothing unusual. Life was dull and although it was not very wealthy, the villagers were very satisfied. This group of people were villagers in Caojiawan, and 80% of the families in the village had their surnames Cao.

Then what? What happened? What made the family surnamed Cao disappear overnight? Is it a natural disaster or a man-made disaster?

According to my grandfather, all the changes originated from an earthquake, and I can only imagine the following scene.

On this day, the number of mice in the village suddenly increased a lot, and the children chased and caught mice everywhere. Lao Cao, who worked in the field, had an ominous premonition. Before going to the field, the donkey's reaction made him puzzled. If it were usual, the donkey was relatively obedient. Today, the donkey seemed restless. When he passed by the pigpen, the pig's reaction made him feel even more panicked. The pig was crazily touching everywhere.

When Lao Cao recalled the strange phenomena he saw today, he couldn't help but have some random thoughts.

"Shopkeeper, I always feel something is wrong today. Do you think something will happen?" Lao Cao said to his wife after rolling up a stick of dry tobacco.

After hearing this, Lao Cao's wife raised her head and glared at Lao Cao, and then cursed: "Don't be sarcastic for a day! You can't work in front of others, and you're still thinking about it all day long. After you finish the work, hurry up and work!"

Lao Cao knew that what he got would be a scolding. He was used to it. His wife never praised him, nor did he know how it became this marriage. He didn't say anything anymore and slowly finished smoking the cigarette.

After working for a day, Lao Cao and his wife returned home. Lao Cao's youngest son ran over and said to Lao Cao, "Dad, there are a lot of mice in the village today! We caught mice for a day." After hearing his son's words, Lao Cao's heart became even more messy.

"Baby, I know how to catch mice all day, and I don't know how to do some serious things." Old Cao scolded his son. In fact, he knew in his heart that his son's words made him feel even more panicked. He now had a clear premonition that disaster would come.

Lao Cao thought about telling the villagers about his unknown premonition, but based on his popularity, who in the village can still believe him?

After working hard for a day, Lao Cao soon fell asleep. The village became silent, and occasionally you could hear a few barking sounds of dogs.

"Dad, the earth is moving!"

Lao Cao was awakened by his son's shouting, and he felt the earth shaking violently. At this time, the whole family jumped off the kang.

Lao Cao shouted: "Everyone runs out! Run quickly!"

Because the earth was shaking too violently, Lao Cao could no longer maintain his balance and ran out stumbled. His cell phone was pulling the youngest son, and the doll was already scared to tears, and the crying made the panic even more panic.

The village began to boil, the livestock were roaring, the villagers were shouting, and at the critical moment of their own care, they all wanted to run away quickly.

"Shopkeeper, look!" Lao Cao's wife said to Lao Cao.

Lao Cao looked at it and saw the huge mountain falling towards them.

All the people froze in an instant, and they clearly realized that God was taking their lives.

Not long after, the air was filled with the smell of earth, and the fog enveloped the entire village. The sound of rumbling mountains moving came from the air, and there were tragic calls for help everywhere.

Lao Cao turned around and cried at his family. He said to his family, "Everyone is strong, don't cry! Let's see you in the next life!"

Before Lao Cao finished speaking, their family was covered under the loess.

The earthquake stopped, and a village in Caojiawan was buried underground. The entire mountain had a huge displacement. After the mountain collapsed, a new mountain was formed. On the mountain, there were also air waves caused by the earthquake.

Caojiawan was destroyed at this moment. None of the families of Cao surnamed were spared and buried under the mountains that raised this village.

More than a month later, the first person with a different surname came up on the ruins. When he saw the ruins in front of him, his tears fell down because his sister was here.

Just as he was kneeling down and crying, he heard the sound of the donkey pushing the mill. He put his ear on the loess and clearly heard the movements underground. He quickly picked up the shovel and dug it up, but he never dared to stop. When the digging was the next day, the sound from the ground disappeared. He knew that the only glimmer of hope was shattered, so he put down the shovel and cried sadly.

In the years that followed, no one dared to live on this mountain, not because he was worried about earthquakes, but because he was afraid of the dead souls buried in the mountains.

Until one day, a group of people came here to escape famine. They were preparing to settle here. Before they settled, they heard this terrible story. The disaster did not scare the group of people, and they resolutely decided to settle here. In order to commemorate the dead villagers, they continued to use the original village name.

After knowing this story, I regret the villagers who died in the disaster and admire the villagers who later settled here. If there were indeed dead souls, I believe they would not cause trouble for the people later, because the people later continued to live for them, planting the land they had not planted, and drinking enough water they had not drunk.

Since I learned this story, every time I went to my uncle's house and passed by the mountain behind, I had to keep a long eye on it, because I knew that all the history of a village was buried under the mountain.

Lao Cao must have been particularly upset. He had a premonition of the earthquake in advance. However, he was helpless and could not convince the villagers, nor could he convince his wife and children. But perhaps Lao Cao did not have too many thoughts, and he would think that all this was destined and could not escape if he wanted to prevent it.

The indigenous villagers of Caojiawan should not have any regrets. Although the earthquake took away their lives, it did not take away the soul of Caojiawan. The name Caojiawan has been followed.

Old Li sat on the ground, looked at the mountain range behind him, and told his son this sad story.

When Lao Li's son grew up, he walked out of the mountain and came to the city. Lao Li's grandson was very curious about the village in the story when he heard what his grandfather told him.
