(13) Humiliation on the Streets

The noon sun passed through the window frame, lazily climbed up to the head of my bed, and looked at the small alarm clock left by my father on the table. It was already 11 o'clock.

I got up dizzyly, feeling my cheeks and teeth swollen, and half of my face was still swollen. In fact, what was more hurt than ** was my heart. I went into the factory to be the little vanity of a city man. I was completely torn apart by Fatty Zhang and a tuft of Mao Xiaoli yesterday afternoon, which made me feel extremely ashamed and humiliated.

The spring afternoon sun had a warm atmosphere, so I ate half a dried pancake in boiled water before I could recover. I dragged my legs to the front yard, sat on the cement platform in front of the small building of the guesthouse, and looked around empty. The courtyard under the sun was quiet and peaceful at this moment, and even the sparrows that had been playing on the old ginkgo trees all day long were flying to.

I live in this cotton mill guesthouse, which is different from the general sense of the guesthouse. It is not to receive visitors from outside, but to serve the employees of our factory. It can be said to be a temporary resettlement site for everyone. Around the Spring Festival every year, when the husbands of these female workers (and a very small number of male workers’ families) come to visit relatives, they can apply to the workshop, and then report to the factory office for approval, and come to the hospitality in the factory for a holiday. It is said that every Spring Festival, there are a lot of guests here, and Fatty Zhang and Xiao Li and his gang called it "xx office". Of course, the Spring Festival has passed long ago, and the building is empty. No one has been here for the time I have been here.

There is only one administrator in the factory guesthouse, the wife of the administrative section chief Qin Dabing. This is a fat woman with scar eyes. My father asked me to call her Aunt Cao. When I came to take over this time, my father caught the two little roosters. On the night after I went to the factory to report, my father sent her to their house. My father asked her to take care of me and allowed me to continue living in the power distribution room of the guesthouse. Aunt Cao looked at the flapping little rooster and agreed with a smile.

Aunt Cao doesn't come here normally, and a bunch of keys inside and outside the guesthouse is hung behind the door of the distribution room where I live all year round. Usually, when someone wants to come to live, he will go to her home to find her and hand over the approved procedures. She will shake her round body and bring the people who want to stay here. Usually, my father helps to take care of her, but now it's me. Aunt Cao continues to be at ease and relax.

Last Sunday, I was bored and opened every room upstairs and downstairs of the guesthouse, searched through the corners and found two expired meal tickets, a comb with broken teeth, a few waste toothpaste skins and a lot of old newspapers. Under the reed mat of a bed board, I found a latex cover with a fishy smell. I carried the round head in front of it, looked carefully, and recognized that it was the kind of balloon that my elementary school deskmate Sanhong blew. I threw it out the door in anger, and it stuck to the branches of the ginkgo tree.

Sanhong's mother is the women's director of our brigade. She once promised to give me one to play when copying my homework. The next day I asked her excitedly when she asked for it, but she said she forgot to bring it. She kept forgetting to bring it again and again until I forgot about it. Later, because of this, I made a "hate" with Sanhong, and later I made a "hate" with Sanhong, and for this, I brought the children from the two villages to fight each other all year round until I came to take over this time.

I was bored while sitting, feeling depressed and uncomfortable. I looked up and saw that it was still early, so I thought about going out for a walk. To be honest, I have been in the city for a while and I have not really been to the streets.

I locked the gate of the guesthouse and walked out of the living area on the curbs and rocks. On Sundays, there were crowds of people on the road. I walked east along Renmin Road. After walking for about ten minutes, I saw the towering ancient bell tower in the center of the city.

The afternoon sun was a little dazzling. I stood under the ancient bell tower, with my hand covering my forehead, and raised my neck to look at the mottled plaque, "Yu Zhenjin..." I tried hard to recognize the last word on it, but suddenly a hoarse scolding came from behind me.

"Hey--that boy, why are you standing here?"

I looked back in surprise and saw a few young men with long hair standing in front of the cultural center next to the ancient bell tower. A monkey face was wearing a military coat, staring at me with his eyes and pointing at me.

"Why are you standing here? Didn't you see this is a crossroad?"

As he scolded him sternly, I was a little confused, not knowing what mistake I had made, and I was a little helpless for a moment.

A little flat head beside the monkey face saw me panic, and grinned and continued to yell at me, "I came from the countryside, is it the first time I have entered the city? I don't even understand the traffic rules."

"I also wore a work clothes and even had big leather shoes. Where did I steal it?" A guy beside the monkey face glanced at me and swept me up and down.

"No, it's... it's sent by the factory." When I heard them falsely accusing themselves of stealing things, my heart suddenly jumped up and explained stammeringly.

"What's not again? I'll try you again later. Let's go around the bell tower first, understand the traffic rules before leaving." Monkey face waved impatiently.

Seeing a group of people's aggressive appearance, I didn't dare to ask why again, so I quickly circled around the Drum Tower.

I returned to my original place, and before I could stop, Monkey Face urged impatiently, "Another circle, this is a punishment for you! I will never forget it next time I come to the city, I don't understand the rules at all!"

A group of onlookers burst into laughter. I didn't understand what to do. I was thinking in my mind why I still had to circle around, standing there in a daze, not knowing what to do for a moment.

"Oh..." Xiao Pingtou was about to give orders to me again, but suddenly his face changed suddenly. He leaned into the monkey's ear and muttered: "Our mortal enemy, the second tiger in the north of the city is here."

"Where is it?" A hint of panic appeared in the monkey's eyes, and waved to the accomplices around him, and whispered: "Retreat quickly!"

The monkey-faced group crawled into the gate of the cultural center behind me. I followed the direction of Xiao Pingtou's finger just now and saw two bald fat men walking over from the north street.

Seeing that the monkey faces were gone, I hesitated for a moment, and hurriedly lifted my steps, took two steps at three steps, and went up the steps of the department store opposite.

This was my first time entering a department store. The goods were not rich at that time, but for me, a rural child, I still felt a little dazzled and overwhelmed. I didn't have a penny on my body, so I walked upstairs and downstairs to feast my eyes. When I left the door of the department store and returned to the street again, the two bald fat men had long disappeared.

The slanting sun shone on the white road, and the tall ancient bell tower reflected a silver light. Monkey face and Xiaopingtou and a group of people came out again, and were still standing in front of the cultural center. An old farmer who was going to the city to sell vegetables was being sent to circle around the bell tower like me.

"One more circle, no, I have to go another circle, haha..."

This farmer who was honest in the cart was already walking around. A group of bored spectators were shouting loudly. I suddenly understood what kind of traffic rules were. This was the monkey-faced group of people were bored and were trying to make fun of the country people.

"Come here quickly!" Xiao Ping turned his head and glanced at me again, and shouted at me with a stern face, "You haven't finished turning a circle just now!"
