Chapter Eleven Raising Black Goats

It rained lightly on the 16th day of the sixth lunar month and 66th. People who do farm work cannot get a job. Many people are staring at the drizzling rainy day and can only stay at home to eat their old capital.

Some low-lying fields were flooded by rain, and crops and fruits and vegetables were more or less lost. Fortunately, the rain came and went quickly this time, and the rising water also subsided. It cleared up in the next ten days and was cloudless.

There is a large open space in the back mountain. If it is only used to raise some local chickens and other poultry, it would be a pity. So my grandfather had some idea and thought that raising sheep is cheaper than raising cattle, and the mutton in the vegetable market is more expensive than beef, so he decided to find time to buy some black goats to raise them.

If black goats are allowed to run around the mountains and fields or rush into crop fields, it is very easy to cause damage to these vegetables. After rolling the sheep's tongue, chewing the teeth carefully, and even the grass roots are uprooted, it would not be hated, and it would be bad if the neighborhood relationship is not harmonious.

So my grandfather asked a few carpenters to use bamboo and wood to build a sheep pen.

But Fang Ning was not lazy either. He followed his grandfather diligently and went to several villages and towns in Dazhou to find some black goats to come back.

Because I was worried that I was inexperienced and was afraid that I would be cheated by others and buy some inferior sheep seeds back, my grandfather specially found someone who knew the way to help me watch it. Fortunately, the sellers were all real people and didn't cheat anyone.

From then on, the family has been busy.

Every day, my grandmother gets up as soon as she washes, and after washing, she goes to the sheep pen and puts all black goats of all sizes in the back mountain to eat grass. Occasionally, there is also straw mixed with bean cake feed, which means that the straw in the countryside is cut into small sections, usually about one centimeter long. If it is too long, it is not conducive to the absorption of black goats. As for soybean cakes, wheat, sweet potatoes and other coarse grains, they are soaked in light salt water, crushed and ground before feeding.

The feed these sheep can produce a large amount of sheep manure every month. These sheep manures are placed in the city to pollute the environment, but in this rural area sheep manure can also be used as fertilizer and waste. When throwing it into the large area of desert on the mountain on the right, turning over the soil with a plow and rake, the manure will be buried deep into fertilizer. It will take more than ten days to become a vegetable field with oily oil.

Grandma has also raised black goats. She has some experience, of course, she has only raised a few sheep, but after raising these dozen black goats, she is a little overwhelmed.

It is not a matter of manpower. Generally, when driving rams or head sheep, the black goats will be obediently squeezed into a ball into the sheep pen.

It's mainly other big issues.

At first, the black goats were fed and ate grass in the back mountain without any problems. However, when they entered the sheep pen overnight, they always had diarrhea, lying on the ground, and had no appetite for food. They were sick and their fur color was not smooth. Some black goats were even very sick.

In order not to affect the health of other black goats, grandparents could only catch the goats that were in trouble first and put them in the newly built sheep pen.

Strangely, the sick black goat was released alone and healed after being cured every night, and he jumped around and did not vomit or diarrhea.

This made my grandmother a little anxious. My grandfather also looked at it and found no problem. In the end, he invited the local shepherd who raised goats to come.

Fang Ning and his family were all gathered in the sheep pen and stared at them. When the old shepherd, who was in his fifties, came here, he saw a few glances and knew where the problem was.

The first is the ventilation problem. The ammonia in the sheep pen is too heavy and the feces are full of sheep manure. Inadequate sanitation and cleaning can easily cause black goats to get sick. The second is that too much salt is added to the feed and water. Sheep can easily get angry after eating it. This is also the fundamental cause of diarrhea in the black goats.

Since the cause has been found, it is much easier to prescribe the right medicine.

Grandpa and Fang Ning first put the black goat in the back mountain, then changed into rubber shoes, clothes for rainy days, put on masks, picked up shovels and bucket trucks, cleaned what should be cleaned, and shoveled out what should be shoveled out, then cleaned the sheep pen with a water gun, and installed two exhaust fans on the wooden beam of the sheep pen to improve the ventilation environment, and finally sprinkled lime on the sheep pen to disinfect it.

The second problem of getting angry if you eat too much salt is easy to solve. Before leaving, the shepherd told them a solution: install a thin iron rack in the sheep pen and tie a bamboo tube next to it. It doesn’t have to be too long. It looks like a section. Then drill a few holes at the bottom and around the bamboo tube, and then pour the salt into it. Every night before the sheep return to the pen, drop a few drops of water in the bamboo tube filled with salt, and then the salt water will flow out along the hole. The black goat who wants to eat salt can lick the salt water outside with its tongue.

After the problem of black goat's illness was solved, life gradually became leisurely.

Every day, my grandfather went to the mountains to cut bamboo baskets. This is a skill that can be used to work slowly and meticulously. One can be made in two or three days. The cut bamboo rattan is weaved into a bamboo basket, and it must be painted with green paint and finally hung on the wall.

Fang Ning said that this is a craft and will be useful at that time, so let it stay.

Fang Wei regained his naughty and cheerful personality. Perhaps he has been familiar with the children in the village during this period, and is not so restrictive or unfamiliar, so he let go of his hands and feet.

She is different from the skinny children in the village. After all, she is a child who has lived in a village outside. She has more knowledge than the ones in the mountain buns. In addition, she has money, so she can just buy some snacks to deceive these children into being the boss and playing with them. She is simply a child king.

Fang Ning, who was grazing sheep on the hillside, hid on the lawn, crossing his legs and basking in the sun lazily. He saw Fang Wei and a bunch of little kids rushing three black goats to wander here from the east.

The two little kids from the young master also followed Fang Wei happily. Logically speaking, Fang Ning and his sister wanted to call them uncles, but Fang Ning couldn't even call them two kids under five years old, so while these two kids were not very sensible, they first called their brothers. It would be difficult to change their words when they called them accustomed to them later.

Fang Wei saw the lazy brother from afar, rolled his eyes, and the sheep in his home were harming other people's vegetable gardens. He was still sleeping in. He probably didn't know how many sheep were missing!

Fortunately, these three cunning black goats were caught by Fang Wei as soon as they slipped down from this hillside. They were so scared that they hid in the grass that they only had a small tail exposed.

She couldn't laugh or cry, and she whipped the black goats with a few whips, and kept burying their heads and pushing forward with each other.

"Brother Stinky, I'll send this sheep back to you. Otherwise, you can drive these guys to the back mountain. There are many vegetable gardens under this hillside. Then our sheep should not eat other people's baby vegetable gardens again."

Fang Ning coughed twice, his old face turned red, and he quickly got up with the whip and took over the three "inflicted trouble". The black goats saw the group eating grass on the hillside and mooed back as if they had found an organization.

At around four o'clock in the afternoon, he drove the full goat into the sheep pen, then returned home to take a shower, and washed the smell of sheep on his body with soap.

After dinner in the evening, I went into the pavilion to hide from the shade and enjoy the cool air.
