Chapter 101 Weapons (4)

m24 grenades are usually stored in metal packaging boxes, and each bullet box contains fifteen grenades. As for why it is odd, it is because it needs to leave room for the grenade's fuse packaging box.

As mentioned in the previous article, the German grenades were separated from the fuse and the bullet body during transportation, which can ensure safety during transportation, because TNT charges will only be detonated only if they use detonators, and they will only burn slowly even when they encounter open flames, which is why it is called "safety explosive".

Only before the battle did the German army install fuses on the grenades and distribute them to the soldiers in need. However, when the frontline ammunition is tight, only veterans can get the grenades because they can play the role of this weapon better than the rookies.

Some data from later generations showed that the shooting distance of the handleless grenade was farther than that of the handled bullet, and some data showed the exact opposite situation. To put it bluntly, it is very simple. The total weight of light objects is farther than that of the m24. The weight of the US mkii grenade is exactly the same. The throwing distance between the two is almost the same. However, looking at the loading amount of the two, the German m24 charge 170 grams, while the mkii is only 65 grams, which is more than twice the difference between the two.

mkii is a defensive grenade. Its killing mechanism is different from m24. In fact, the two should not be compared together. It is mentioned here to illustrate that when the charge amount is equal, the handled grenade can often be thrown further than the egg grenade due to its special throwing method.

Of course, this also depends on the physical condition and habits of the users. For example, many Americans have learned to play baseball since childhood, so they are more capable than Germans. On the contrary, they will feel uncomfortable if they are asked to throw German grenades.

The German army also had sessile oval grenades, with a fixed number of m39, which is also an offensive grenade. It uses a thin steel plate shell pressed by upper and lower halves. The killing range is controlled within five meters like m24, and the weight is only 340 grams, so the throwing distance is even further than m24. At the same time, because the charge has been reduced to 112 grams, the power has also decreased a little. Of course, the enemy soldiers who were hit with such grenades may not agree with this view.

Xu Jun was preparing to make major improvements to the m39 grenade. He wanted to use mechanical fuses to replace the original fire-pulling tube. In this regard, the head of Xu Da had a lot of designs to learn from, such as the US military's mkii. Xu Jun found that the m39 equipped with mechanical fuses and safety films looked almost exactly the same as the m26 equipped by the US military later, which made people wonder if there was any connection.

Xu Jun expected that the German army would face a cruel tug-of-war on the Eastern Front, mainly focusing on various support points and solid defense lines, so the troops must be equipped with a large number of defensive grenades.

The production of steel balls or grooved wire nesting of m24 grenades has been placed at the highest priority. As for the improved model of m39, it has been designated as m40 grenades, and is still made of thin steel plate stamping, but a prefabricated broken interlayer is added inside. Each grenade is filled with 150 alloy steel balls of two millimeter diameter, which can penetrate two millimeter-thick stamping steel plates within the kill range.

The weight of this grenade is one hundred grams more than m39, and the charge has not changed. Soldiers can hang it on the belt around their waists, or use a special canvas carrying bag, and there is also a triple canvas grenade leg bag that can be used by paratroopers and mountain troops.

Xu Jun also equipped a batch of seized grenades in the German army, such as the Mills grenade mentioned earlier. The German army had a good impression of it, especially the insurance design, which can be interrupted during combat. You need to just insert the safety pin again and replace it with the German army's own m24 and m39, and after pulling the string, you can only throw it out.

There are only these improvements for the grenade. Of course, some special types of bullets will be developed at the same time, such as the smoke bomb used by the German army the most, which is the most commonly used weapon for the squad and platoon attack. The German infantry tactics emphasized the role of the smoke barrier on the attacking side.

After talking about the grenades, let’s take a look at the German rifle grenades. The German army currently has only two types of rifle grenades, one is high-explosive personnel killing bullets, and the other is anti-armor grenades. The former loads about 30 grams of medicine, and the latter uses hollow charges, which can penetrate 50 mm steel plates. The performance can only be said to be average in the early days of World War II. Originally, the senior army leaders were planning to use this thing to fill the fire gap between the grenades and mortars. As a result, when the front-line troops used it, most of them were only used to attack some solid targets.

The German army's existing rifle grenade launcher is called SMK (a grenade launcher equipped with a sight at the muzzle). Note that m is capitalized, otherwise it will become a steel core armor-piercing projectile. This launcher is placed on the muzzle through a bayonet holder to launch personnel killing and anti-armor grenades. Because the German army currently has only 30 grams of grenade charges, its power and range are quite touching.

What is even more surprising is that the number of SMK grenade launchers is not distributed to the troops. The weapons conventionally used by the German army to fire grenades are actually a signal gun set in 1928.

Moreover, because the prototype signal gun is a smoothbore barrel, it is not suitable for firing grenades, the German army also specially added five rifles to this gun. In order to distinguish it from the prototype, the gun was marked with the z-shaped mark, so the German army called this grenade pistol "z combat pistol".

The performance of this weapon on the French battlefield is very average, mainly because the power of ammunition is too weak and the accuracy of long distances is too low, so soldiers often need to shoot at the target close. In that case, it is really not as convenient as using grenades.

The famous "Cup" grenade launcher in history has not been invented at this time. In fact, this grenade launcher named Type 42 will not be fully equipped until 43 years, and each combat team can only be assigned one.

To be honest, the German army is not very interested in rifle grenades at present, because it is because the performance of the "Z combat pistol" on the French battlefield has lost its appetite. SMK's response is not very good, because after using this launcher to fire the grenade, the residue and flame of the launcher will damage the rifle muzzle, so it is not popular with German soldiers.

Now that Germany has changed its new head of state, the embarrassing position of rifle grenades in the German army is about to change. At this time, European countries have more or less equipped some grenade launchers to launch special rifle grenades or conventional grenades. It should be pointed out here that among similar weapons, Japan is ahead of the whole world. They designed and developed unique grenade launchers, which surpassed their European counterparts in both performance and power.

Before the British Battle, Britain created a grenade ejector like a desperate attempt, but this was just a rough emergency product, which was completely different from Japan's professional grenade launcher.

Xu Jun once considered equipting grenade launchers in the German army, but found that they overlapped with the German 50mm mortar. Compared with grenade launchers that require long-term training and accumulated experience to master, mortars with a full set of sights are easier for Xindian to get started.

So Head of State Xu put his eyes back on the grenade launcher. He could directly take out the 42-type cup shooting system in history, but the head of state who had seen a large number of advanced models in later generations no longer took this thing seriously.

Finally, after repeated selections, Xu Jun finally determined a grenade launcher that he thought was the most suitable for the current German army, which was the US m79 grenade launcher that caused the Vietnamese jungle to blood on the ground.

Some people later called it m79 hand cannon or grenade gun. Since its birth, this weapon was destined to be covered in blood. Until the 21st century, it was still in service in the US special forces. Only then did people realize that this weapon, which looked stupid, big and thick, had been fighting for the United States for almost half a century.
