Chapter 447 [Mussolini] Line of Defense (End)

Sardinia fell, Lombardy, Palma des Martin, Montena descent, Venice and Sicily fell, and down Sicily was in danger, and Tuscanna was facing the German army's front.

This list includes almost all the richest and most developed regions in Italy. The Savoy royal family, standing on the shoulders of the Kingdom of Sardinia, relied on these regions to maintain their rule.

The total fall of the northwestern industrial zone of Italy made the Italian army unable to obtain new supplies of ordnance and ammunition. What is unbelievable is that this kind of thing that should have been strictly kept secret was soon known to everyone on the streets and alleys, so as expected, the morale of the army and the people instantly fell by 30%.

Interestingly, the Savoy royal family, who should have been furious, remained silent during this period, which really made Mussolini, who was under tremendous pressure, feel grateful. As long as the royal family still stands behind him, the political situation in Italy can continue to remain stable.

He had already noticed that in the past few days, some undercurrents within the Roman government, some party leaders and royal MPs were connected in private, but Mussolini was still confident that he could control all the situation. He had been in power in Italy for many years and had established indivisible chains of interests with these MPs and politicians. He judged that these people were just shaken under the threat of war, and these cowards were destined to be impossible to do anything big.

Mussolini didn't have the heart to care about these problems at this time. What he had been thinking about in his mind for the past two days was how to make Germany agree to make peace with it alone, so that Italy could end this ridiculous war with decent.

Mussolini really wanted to surrender. He was now convinced that the [Mussolini] defense line could not save the failure of the Italian kingdom. Although the German army stopped advancing in the middle of the Apennines, the Italian troops on other fronts were still retreating step by step. If he had not seen any problem hidden behind this, he would have been a leader for so many years.

Some confidants within the army reported to him that there was only one empty space left in several theater commands. The generals were playing games when making plans. There was no one in the grassroots army to command. The troops lacked ammunition and supplies, and the morale in the troops was very poor. Many people were worried about whether their hometown was attacked and bombed by the German army.

Rumors were everywhere in the army, but the officers seemed to have not seen these situations at all. If the situation was allowed to develop, I believe that there would be few people left to continue the war soon.

Italian soldiers are not cowardly warriors, but they often lack judgment and generally have low educational levels. Many people are worried that they will become meaningless cannon fodder in this war.

After all, it was still the same problem. The Italian soldiers could not see any hope of winning. Even if the Roman radio stations were blown up the defense line of Mussolini as iron walls, these people only saw a hundred bullets in their hands and a Carcano rifle older than them.

Mussolini believed that these reports were true, but he could not come up with any useful solutions for how to change all this. He could not punish the generals who "de-duel" at this time. On the contrary, he had to constantly use his benefits to win over these bastards. At this moment, he should be glad that these people were at least obeying their orders on the surface.

Mussolini is currently able to control only some of the army and the surrounding areas of Rome. Some provinces, cities and local councils in Sicily have publicly resisted the Prime Minister's order. They said that when thinking about the overall strategy, the Roman government must also take into account local difficulties.

At the same time, some politicians began to accuse Mussolini, claiming that it was because of his reckless behavior that ultimately led to this unnecessary war. Although this is a problem that everyone recognizes in their hearts, this is the first time that someone has mentioned it in public. It is the first time in more than ten years that someone dares to point the finger at Mussolini directly.

This was simply an open rebellion against the Prime Minister. What Mussolini could not tolerate was that among the local leaders, many of them were colleagues from the fascist national party.

The main force of the Italian Air Force has been dragged to death in Albania. There is little fuel left in their local reserves, and the supply line to the local area has been cut off. The once powerful Italian Air Force group was paralyzed in groups of Albanian bases due to lack of components and fuel.

The German and Yugoslav coalition forces had already invaded Albania, and the Albanians showed a very cooperative attitude. The people even rushed to bring out food and wine to entertain the German troops. The German Wehrmacht was regarded as the liberator who came to help the Albanian people and rescued them from the evil Italian colonists. The German soldiers were warmly welcomed by the local people in every town he arrived.

The Italian fascist police and military police forces made little resistance, and they put down their weapons and surrendered to the German army almost immediately after contact. Their only request was that the German army was responsible for ensuring their personal safety, because once they fell into the hands of those almost crazy Albanians, they would encounter extremely terrible things.

Keitel specifically asked the commander's headquarters and then conveyed the head of state order to the entire army. The German army not only had to ensure the safety of prisoners of war, but also provided assistance to the Italian expatriates in the controlled area. They could temporarily hide in the German barracks to avoid being hurt by local civilians. The German Wehrmacht would be responsible for their safety. Although these people would lose most of the property accumulated here, they could at least save the lives of the whole family.

German fighter jets blocked the airspace around the Italian air base. The bulky Savoya Macheti 79 "Sparrow Eater" or Gunter z1007 "Kingfisher" did not dare to take off at all, and could only be destroyed by German bombers next to the runway and in the hangar.

General Alexandro, commander-in-chief of the Air Force in Albania, reported to Rome that his troops were in extreme danger, and that the Albanians were attacking Italian garrisons and civilians everywhere, and that the country was turning into an Italian hell. He demanded that if Rome no longer provides support or came up with a solution, he could only choose to lead the troops to surrender to the German army at some appropriate time.

The Italian air force wing suffered heavy losses in the confrontation with the German, French and British air forces. The pilots of the Sixth Independent Fighter Brigade stationed in Naples collectively disobeyed and refused to take off for the mission. The initial Markey M200 model they were flying had some flaws that had not been resolved yet. When they encountered the German aces flying Mercedes Schmidt, they were immediately defeated. A flying brigade with twenty-six fighter jets finally survived only seven people.

The Italian Navy was even more likely to break up with Mussolini. The Italian Navy Commander-in-Chief General Angelo Iakino used the excuse of going to Taranto to inspect the fleet and took the former chief of staff to never return. The Roman Navy General Command only left two or three kittens, and the highest rank was just a colonel.

The naval fleets all contracted in several military ports, and even the basic patrols of normal times were no longer ongoing. The Italian submarine troops, which were once very active, returned to their respective home ports and stopped sailing. The navy clearly was not ready to confront the Three Kingdoms coalition head-on.

However, Mussolini could not condemn this blatant treason, and he could not even mention it, because once the news leaked, the little morale that finally inspired the [Mussolini] defense line would immediately collapse.

General Graziani of Libya sent a telegram to inquire and ask for materials every day. The Italian border troops stationed there had exchanged fire with the French foreign corps several times. It was obvious that the French were conducting battlefield reconnaissance and temptation before a large-scale attack. He needed more soldiers, tanks, cannons and materials on the Western Front, otherwise it would be difficult to stop the French from the direction of Turkish Nice. In the information currently in control, the French gathered a powerful mechanized force there.

What is even more worrying is that the Commonwealth troops stationed on the Eritrea border are being frequently mobilized. Obviously, the British are also preparing to take advantage of the situation and have started to think about this African colony that was first developed by Italy. (To be continued.)
