Chapter 6: The generals gather to talk about retreating,

The autumn of 1894 was destined to be a turbulent autumn. After a few days of rest, Ye Zhikui's wound recovered very quickly, and he had already scarred and could remove the gauze. After the Battle of Chenghuan, the Chinese and Japanese armies were relatively quiet these days. Yoshikazu Oshima was waiting for the arrival of weapons, and the Qing soldiers were unable to launch a major battle. Although there were constant small battles during this period, no major battles occurred, and under the command of Nie Shicheng, they were repelled.

Early in the morning, Ye Zhikui got up to exercise. The last battle made him realize that even if he was in an important position, he still needed to lead the team to charge occasionally.

After doing about a hundred push-ups, the messenger came to report that General Nie had invited him. Ye Zhikui was not surprised. Yesterday, news came that the main force of the Japanese Fifth Division had completely entered North Korea and gathered in Seoul between Chenghuan and Pyongyang. Qing army reinforcements also gathered in Pyongyang in early August. Because Seoul was separated in the middle, Ye Zhikui was out of reach. If the Japanese army dispatched troops from Seoul, Ye Zhikui and others would have to wait to be driven down to the river to feed the turtle. Nie Shicheng and Ye Zhichao, as the generals of the Qing army, could not see this. In this way, withdrawing the troops became the only choice. Ye Zhikui estimated that Nie Shicheng sent someone to discuss the matter.

After Ye Zhikui washed up, he rushed to Nie Shicheng's main camp with Wen Baishan. As soon as Ye Zhikui entered the door, he saw that Nie Shicheng's battalion officials and some of the sentry officers had already taken seats. Nie Shicheng was commanding Lutai Huai army training, and Ye Zhikui led the elite troops of Zhili Huai army, so he was not very familiar with most of the generals of Nie Shicheng's army. However, Ye Zhikui still greeted the generals with a smile, holding the rituals of the younger generations. Because Ye Zhikui came to help in time before, he was also very enthusiastic about him. Seeing Ye Zhikui was not arrogant or impatient, he felt that this young man was very good at being a human being.

Ye Zhikui looked at it and sat down at Jiang Zikang. Wen Baishan was sitting behind him. Jiang Zikang was in his fifties and had few words. He was a relatively orthodox Qing general. Because he was born in a poor family, he was promoted to this point with his own efforts. Therefore, he did not have much affection for the second generation of Ye Zhikui, the official second generation, and did not have much contact with each other. However, he was controlled by Ye Zhichao and ordered to lead the tiger camp Ren to help, and he was considered Ye Zhikui's life-saving benefactor. Ye Zhikui was really speechless about Ye Zhikui's arrogant and arrogant personality like a 250-year-old man. No wonder he was even wearing a thatched cottage. It seems that he was pretending too much on weekdays.

Ye Zhikui first held a junior tribute, and then thanked Jiang Zikang repeatedly. Jiang Zikang was not used to Ye Zhikui's enthusiasm. He squeezed out a few smiles on his face and nodded, saying hello.

Soon, Nie Shicheng stepped in and after a greeting, everyone sat down again. Nie Shicheng sat in the first place, looking at the crowded generals and laughed with his beard. After everyone calmed down, Nie Shicheng said: "I believe everyone here already knows that the Fifth Japanese Division gathered in Seoul. If we come to help, it will lead to an enemy from both sides. Moreover, there are many Japanese soldiers and generals. I have sent letters to Shuqing (Ye Zhichao) and think that we can only retreat first to avoid his sharpness before making plans. Let's talk about how to retreat."

Nie Shicheng was unambiguous and went straight to the point and put forward the theme. The generals below began to discuss. Historically, the Qing army retreated as early as the day of the Battle of Chenghuan, began to retreat to Pyongyang, bypassed Seoul, and traveled through Chungju and Jinhua. It took a arduous journey for a month before meeting with the Pyongyang army that entered the North Korea to participate in the war.

Ye Zhikui couldn't help feeling funny when he saw Jiang Zikang sitting in his seat like a clay Buddha, and turned his body to ask, "Old Jiang, what do you think?"

Jiang Zikang curled his lips and said, "Passing Zhongzhou, Jinhua, and entering Pyongyang." It seems that this guy has a gully in his heart. In fact, everyone here is not stupid. Most of them have considered it before coming. There are only one or two roads that can be seen at a glance by a discerning person. The reason why Nie Shicheng wanted to summon the generals to discuss retreating was actually the order of the retreat troops and some follow-up preparations discussed, such as who will cut off the rear, which is a major issue that concerns his own safety and cannot be careless.

When Ye Zhikui heard Jiang Zikang's answer, he asked again: "Who is the rear army?"

Jiang Zikang smiled rarely and said, "I am old and cannot bear the great responsibility. I have the courageous people behind the scenes."

You old man, what does it mean to be unable to bear the responsibility and what is behind the scenes? Isn’t this talking about me? We just got the first merit on the battlefield last time, and you are jealous of me and cursed you, an immortal, who fell to death while walking and died of eating. Ye Zhikui cursed in his heart.

But he still replied with a smile on his face: "This, my junior lost serious troops a few days ago, and it was not enough to be a heavy responsibility. Besides, Jiang is still hot, and Mr. Jiang is still strong. Who would say that you are old and I have to be anxious with him."

Jiang Zikang curled his lips and stopped talking.

Nie Shicheng saw the generals below quarreled like the great gods who bought vegetables in the vegetable market. After discussing for half a day, no one stood up and said. He couldn't help but frowned, pressed his hands down, and stopped him, "Okay, let's see how well you all become. Don't think I don't know your plans. Congyun, you say."

Ye Zhikui swallowed a saliva and swallowed it with difficulty. Mom, the old Nie directly clicked, but had to stand up and first clicked the left and right. Looking at the secretly happy faces, Ye Zhikui just wanted to rush up and pinch a few times. Damn, he just called me brothers and laughed at me, but he hid far away when he had something to do.

"Mr. Nie, the last general is just by order."

Seeing Ye Zhikui say something like this for a long time, Nie Shicheng couldn't help but smile and said with satisfaction: "Okay, Congyun, you will cut off the enemy for the rear army, and then draw a squadron from Fuqing (Jiang Zikang) Huzi Camp for you." Seeing that Ye Zhikui was about to speak, he hurriedly said: "Okay, that's what we decided, let's discuss other matters."

Nie Shicheng also had a headache. The one who suffered the biggest losses in the last battle was not Ye Zhikui, nor Jiang Zikang, but Nie Shicheng. If he sent his subordinates to break the rear, he would not bear it. Jiang Zikang was rebellious, and only Ye Zhikui was left. As Ye Zhichao's subordinates, only Ye Zhikui could lead the officers and soldiers of the Tiger Camp.

Ye Zhikui was still confused and didn't come back to his senses. The other generals began to discuss other issues enthusiastically. How could this speed be so fast? Ye Zhikui couldn't help but say this, the general of the Qing Dynasty who cheated on him. But there was no way, and the leader spoke, so he had to sit down and start planning to break the rear.
