Chapter 116. The famous print book

As the world's most famous literary masterpiece, Marquez's "Hundred Years of Solitude" is definitely an alternative and a novel that is highly sought after by world literature enthusiasts. Especially in China, "Hundred Years of Solitude" is deeply loved by readers of foreign literature.

Therefore, in China, there are 43 translations of "Hundred Years of Solitude" alone, two of which are the most famous ones, one is the translation version of Huang Jinyan from Shanghai Translation Publishing House in 1984, and the other is the translation version of Gao Changrong from October 1984.

In many domestic university textbooks, Huang Jinyan is used because his literal translation is more authentic and has no abridged. As for Gao Changrong's version, it has slightly changed the original and reads smoother, which is relatively better.

It is precisely because of the special nature of the translation of "Hundred Years of Solitude" that countless Marquez's book fans have started to collect various versions of "Hundred Years of Solitude", which has also made the price of used books of "Hundred Years of Solitude" soaring, and a good version is even hard to find.

"Hundred Years of Solitude" that Lin Yi dug out from the magazine "Rui Li" in front of him was the version published by Shanghai Translation Publishing House and translated by Huang Jinyan in 1984.

However, this book is different from the general one. The cover is beautiful and the type of prints. A family of nine people sits on chairs to take photos. There are rows of houses behind them. There is a proud rooster passing by in front... The color is weird and the composition is abstract.

Lin Yi recognized this book because it also has a very important identity, which belongs to one of the famous "Twentieth Century Foreign Literature Series".

...

The "Twentieth Century Foreign Literature Series" is commonly known as the print book. Since the publication of "Henry IV" in 1980 and the publication of "Bloody Wedding" in 1994, the cover designs of the more than 90 kinds of covers of the series published during this period were all printed in print form, so people call it "print book". The covers of the series published in 1997 are no longer in print form. The republished series include reprints of the "print book" and many are new varieties.

The dozens of works published in the early 20th Century Foreign Literature Series" have the same overall style and layout, and all use exquisite prints as the covers. The covers of these books are based on gray, yellow, green, blue, purple and other colors, and are complex and changeable. The composition of the prints is either a distinctive character image, a unique scene, or an organic combination of characters and scenes. Some of the picture styles are bright and dazzling, some are profound, and some are simple and elegant. In either case, they all reflect the main content or basic style of the book. Therefore, the majority of book collectors cannot put it down, so they favor this series and never tire of searching.

But regrets are that since the end of the 20th century, whether it is another version or a new version, this series of books has changed its previous style and began to use colorful oil paintings as its cover. It has a bit more flashy and less simplicity, and has lost more of the unspeakable beauty. The new binding style not only cannot attract more new readers, but has lost the love of many old readers.

It can be said that the greatest value of the "Twentieth Century Foreign Literature Series" is that many of the books it collects are the only translations in China, and they are also the most classic and authoritative translations. For example, "The Freak of Small Town", "The Corridor of Power", "Good Partners", "The Place of Care", etc., as far as Lin Yi knows, apart from this series, has never been published. People who like contemporary foreign literature, especially those who like European and American modernist literature, have found a happy land here.

Let’s talk about Lin Yi finding this book “A Hundred Years of Solitude”. In the development of Chinese literature in the new era, no foreign literary work has more influence than this magical realism masterpiece. It can be said that this work has penetrated into every inch of Chinese literature in the new era. This strong influence is inseparable from the translation and introduction of this book by the "Twentieth Century Foreign Literature Classics Series". At the beginning of literature in the new era, Marquez just obtained the No. 1

Shortly after the Bell Literature Award, the "Twentieth Century Foreign Literature Series" translated this work, and 48,500 copies were printed in the first edition and 5,500 copies were printed in the second edition. This work has a brand new writing style and technique, causing an "earthquake" in the Chinese literary world. Not only did it come out of "Hundred Years of Solitude" and other famous contemporary writers such as Mo Yan, Zhashidawa, and Alai, but more writers have integrated "Hundred Years of Solitude" into their blood and re-infused them into their works.

Due to the limitations of subject matter, the "Twentieth Century Foreign Literature Series" destined to have a very narrow readership, so its printing volume is often very small. Even in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the reading trend was booming, the printing volume was only tens of thousands of copies. After the mid-1980s, the printing volume of best-selling varieties was difficult to reach 10,000 copies, and many of them only printed about 2,000 copies. With such a printing volume, after time, it is difficult to collect all this series of books, and it is even more difficult to find a good quality.

Lin Yi once saw an introduction to this kind of book in "Tao Shu Notes", and he was more clear about the value of this set of books and knew very well about this rare and valuable books in this series.

For example---

"Good Partners", the most missing version of the 20th century foreign literature series, is the first and second volumes, one edition and one print in 1989, with only 1,300 volumes printed, and the value is 2,800 yuan above the ninth grade;

"Egyptian Trilogy" "between the two palaces", "Nanlu Street", "Yearing for the Palace" 20th Century Foreign Literature Series, one edition and one print in 1986, with a print volume of 7,700 volumes, and a value of 1,680 yuan above the ninth grade;

"The Horse Man", a 20th Century Foreign Literature Series, written by Updike, was printed in 1991, with only 2,785 volumes printed, worth 1,600 yuan on the ninth grade;

"Xiaoxue" has very little prints in the 20th century Foreign Literature Series. In 1989, one print and one print, only 3,300 volumes were printed, and the value of 1,500 yuan is 1,500 yuan:

"Peter the Great", a series of foreign literature in the 20th century, volume 1 and 2, one edition and one print in 1992, with a print volume of 7,000 volumes, and a value of 1,200 yuan above the ninth grade;

...

It can be said that there are many missing books in this series that are worth thousands of yuan. Even some books with relatively large print volumes can be sold at a very high price. For example, "The Grapes of Angry", which is of good quality, can be sold at a maximum of 150 yuan. The book "Hundred Years of Solitude" in front of you has a quality of more than 95 yuan, and can be sold at a maximum of 230 yuan.

It was precisely because Lin Yi knew the value of this book "Hundred Years of Solitude" that he took it in his hand without hesitation, and then casually asked the stall owner, "Boss, how much does this book cost?"

According to Lin Yi's meaning, the woman just bought six foreign classics, each of which costs only 8 yuan, and this book "Hundred Years of Solitude" is at most about 10 yuan. However, Lin Yi underestimated the wisdom of the stall owner and even misjudged the stall owner's experience in selling books.

The stall owner's eyes flashed with light and he grinned and said, "Brother, I didn't expect you to be an enthusiast of foreign classics. I just saw you have been reading those Chinese classic novels, and I thought you were not interested in these foreign books."

After pausing, he said, "The book you are holding is a good book, written by Marquez... Marquez knows, the magical realism master in Colombia is so famous---"

Then, the stall owner told Lin Yi about Marquez and his works as if he was familiar with him, as if he was Lao Wang next door to Lao Ma's house, and he was very familiar with Lao Ma himself.

Lin Yi wondered, in such a used book stall, in such a situation, a street stall uncle who graduated from junior high school no matter how he looked, actually talked about Marquez and magical realism to you. What is this concept?

So in the end, Lin Yi felt a little embarrassed and asked directly: "What do you think this book costs?"

"Simply, I like scholars who do things simply!" The stall owner stopped spitting, gave Lin Yi a thumbs up, and then quoted without hesitation: "Two hundred and eighty yuan, no penny can be lost!"

Lin Yi was stunned for a moment, but unexpectedly, the stall owner did not offer the price of 10 yuan, but increased dozens of times and offered 28.

Damn, you think I'm stupid!
