76, the wrath of the sea (four)

"Advance east at full speed! Target, Bergen!" At this time, the 1st battle group was within the attack range of British bombers. Marshall wanted to take advantage of the bad weather and the fighter could not take off and return as soon as possible.

The order to return was issued from the flagship Admiral Spee. Three captured British supply ships were emitting black smoke and began to sail at a maximum speed of 18 knots. The German warships followed around slowly.

At 15:40 pm, the German fleet had already sailed directly north of the Shetland Islands and began to sail into the Norwegian Strait. Here, the "Prince Karl" located on the right wing of the fleet reported to the flagship with a signal light: "Unknown target was found at 62 degrees on the starboard side!"

Subsequently, the "Markensen" which was also on the radar also confirmed this situation.

Three minutes later, the "Markensen" reported again: "The other party was one, one, four, and four, and it was very fast. It should be the British fleet!"

At 15:50, Admiral Spee issued an order to "prepare for battle!", and a combat flag was raised on the bow of the ship. The warships suddenly sounded a loud battle alarm. Marshall ordered Admiral Spee, Markensen, Prince Carl and Danze to welcome the enemy, while Prince Frederick and Steding were responsible for protecting the safety of the aircraft carriers and several "prey".

The four German warships began to turn to the right, and black smoke was coming from the chimney. They accelerated towards the target in a light rain. The two radars on each ship were all turned on, and the speed gradually increased to 24 knots. The mechanical ballistic computer in the artillery control radar room was buzzing, calculating the shooting elements quickly.

The target was the British Navy's USS Glory aircraft carrier and four escorted destroyers. After completing the attack on Nalvik, the USS Glory returned with the fast fleet. Commander General John Tovey foresaw that he might be subject to crazy interception by the German Navy, so he chose a strange retreat route. He first led the fleet northwest to a position about 300 nautical miles east of Janmayen Island, and then began to move south again.

He did avoid interception by two fleets of the German fleet, but on the way back, the host of the Glory malfunctioned. Since he had entered the control of the British Air Force in the Shetland Islands, he felt that there would be no danger. Admiral Tovey left four destroyers for escort, and returned alone.

The "Glory" originally planned to return to the Faroe Islands, but since it took most of the day to repair the mainframe, Captain Colonel Ors ordered a change of course without sending a plane to reconnaissance and chose to return to the country from the nearer Shetland Islands.

So, by chance, they just hit the muzzle of the German ship.

Due to the unstable performance of the radar, it is necessary to shut down every two hours for cooling. The radar on the "Glory" did not turn on again after shutting down at 12 o'clock. At 16 o'clock, Colonel Ors ordered the warship to open the search and range-finding radar.

At 16:05, the radar room that had just started the operation reported that four large targets were found to be heading towards them from the southeast Shetland Islands. At this time, the two sides were about 18 nautical miles apart, but the report of the radar room did not arouse Colonel Ors' alert. He took it for granted that the warships were transporting from the direction of Shetland to pick up their British warships, and just ordered the destroyer "Energy" to verify.

At 16:15, the destroyer "Enexin" was able to blur the figures of some warships coming at high speed at a distance of 12,000 meters, so he sent a light recognition signal to the German ship.

The answer to it was a rumbling sound of cannons.

It was not until this time that the "Glory" realized that the situation was not good, so it sounded the battle alarm and sent a telegram for help to the country. Only then did it start to turn and accelerate, trying to escape the attack range of the German ship.
