The new Ukrainian Republic has never been calm since the Central Rada declared independence, and the German and Austrian troops entering Ukraine had to play the role of police. The Soviet troops led by Moscow also counterattacked Kiev in January, but then collapsed under the blow of the German and Austrian coalition commanded by General Hoffman.

However, the Don government led by Karekin is now in danger. The Red Guards from all over the country gathered at Vorenezh at the call of Moscow to support the troops of the Don Revolutionary Military Commission. With the help of the Red Guards, Karekin's troops began to retreat and were forced to abandon Lugansk and Chalizin.

Austro-Hungarian Foreign Minister Cherning met with Karekin in Rostov and expressed his willingness to support Karekin's Don military government on the condition that an independent republic was established in the Don region and separated from Russia.

Karekin refused to be a puppet of the Austrians and rejected Cherning's suggestion.

The situation became increasingly favorable to the Soviet army.

At the end of January, the Red Guards launched an attack on the remnants of Karekin in Taganrog from three aspects. Kornilov also gave up Rostov and led his volunteer army to transfer to the Kuban River Basin.

In despair, Karekin shot himself and the short-lived Don Military Government fell into chaos.

The Austrians finally couldn't sit still. Because they were inconvenient to come forward, they sent three Cossack divisions from the Ukrainian Legion to land in Rostov and sent the Chinese Workers' Legion to the front line.

After Karekin committed suicide, General Nazarov became the new commander of the Don Cossack Army. In order to survive, he began to cooperate with his past enemies.

Supreme Military Commissioner Trotz ordered the Red Guards to launch an attack on Rostov in mid-February.

The 7th Division of the Chinese Workers' Army commanded by Song Huanzhang came ashore in Mariupol, controlled by the Ukrainian army, and then advanced to the Braven River. In the town of Kirnovka north of Taganrog, the Central Regiment and the Kamensk Cossack Regiment loyal to Nazarov launched a fierce battle with the attacking Red Guards.

This is also the first time that the Chinese ** regiment has participated in a large-scale battle.

The two sides fought fiercely for control of the Matviev Railway Bridge. Artillery shells were constantly falling on both sides of the Braven River, the railway line had been blown up, the rails were scattered along the roadbed, the sleepers were removed and fortifications were repaired, and some burning wood was still emitting black smoke.

The Red Guards commanded by Sabrin wanted to cross the Braven River. Under the drag of several steamboats, wooden boats loaded with Red Guards rushed to the river bank. The Red Guards used fierce artillery to suppress the Chinese troops in the fortifications on the river bank. Some people fled from the trenches in the shelling, but the deserters were quickly knocked to the ground by flying shrapnel.

The Chinese workers who had never experienced the war in the trenches were so scared that they were at a loss and hugged under the trench.

"The enemy is coming up, return to the battle position and prepare to shoot!" The officers whistled, bent and ran back and forth in the trenches, and kicked them on the butts of some at a loss.

The Russians started charging along the river beach, bang! I don’t know who fired the first shot first, and then the gunshots like fried beans sounded. Most of the workers who participated in the battle for the first time were nervous, and many people were at a loss. The gunshots were sparse. If they were on the flat ground, the Red Guards would have rushed to the position. Fortunately, the Russians were trapped in the mud on the river beach and moved slowly.

On the other side, the Red Guards lined up sparse scattered lines along both sides of the railway line and advanced outside the town. When they saw the enemy's charge on the Chinese Workers' Corps outside the town, they became a little panicked. Many workers who fired guns at people for the first time in their lives were scared and lay in the trenches and fired randomly. Bullets were flying all over the sky, but they couldn't hit people.

Zhang Weicheng was next to the machine gun in the position and used a telescope to observe the enemy's movements. The Red Guards seemed to have not received any training, and they were not as good as the workers under his command. Some people on the position fired before they could send orders. They could not bear this tense atmosphere, but the enemy was still 500 meters away.

Zhang Weicheng was so angry that he stood in the trench and scolded and shouted, but it was not very useful. He had to order his platoon leaders to kick the soldiers who were shooting with his feet. However, it was not very useful. The continuous shooting sound drowned out his shouting. Zhang Weicheng waved his hand dejectedly and gave an order to the machine gunman: "Fire!"

Li Bangtou leaned his head, covered in mud, on the handle of the gun, and pulled the gun with his fingers.

"Tadadadada!" The crisp gunshots rang continuously. The Breda machine guns equipped by the Chinese Workers' Lewis machine guns were imitations of Italians using British Lewis machine guns, but they used Italian standard 6.5mm standard rifle bullets, and the recoil was actually smaller than that of light machine guns from Germany and Austria.

As several machine guns on the position began to fire, the effect was immediately seen. A small group of Red Guards charging forward immediately retreated behind the small earth slope, leaving several dead bodies on the bare land. There were not many experienced soldiers in the Red Guards. When they encountered an attack, they did not look for cover on the spot, but turned around and started to escape.

Zhang Weicheng breathed a sigh of relief, and the enemy seemed to be no better than his men.

The battle lasted for a whole day. In the evening, light rain began to float in the sky and the earth became wet. The two sides fought back and forth outside the town of Kirnovka, with bullet craters and burnt land everywhere, and corpses like black soil blocks. Before dark, reinforcements from the Chinese Workers' Army arrived again, and the Red Guards commanded by Sabrin retreated.

The Red Guards' offense stopped, and the Austrians picked out the Cossacks from the prisoner-of-war camp, then re-armed, and sent them to the Donets area.

After replenishing the troops, Nazarov and Kornilov became confident again and were no longer as anxious as they had been a while ago.

Kornilov's volunteer army gathered in Rostov again, and he now has about 30,000 people. He has not launched a counterattack for a long time and is waiting for the arrival of General Nazarov. The two need to discuss the allocation plan for supplementing the troops and military supplies from Romania. It is really ironic. The former commander-in-chief of the Russian army now relies on the help of the past enemies.

On March 9, after resisting the attack of the Red Guards, General Nazarov, accompanied by Major General Bogaevsky, the director of the Secretariat of the Don Military Parliament, took a train from Taganrog to Rostov. The Cossack generals who were invited to Rostov to attend the meeting were already here: Kornilov sat on one side of the long table, with a spread out military map in front of him. His right head was General Alexeyev, who was white-haired and skinny. After the October coup, the former commander-in-chief happened to be in Petrograd and finally escaped, avoiding the fate of being imprisoned. On the other side was General Rukomsky, who represented Denikin, who claimed that if the Don Army could be under his command, he would lead the Caucasian Legion south to reinforce.

That's true. Denikin now has nearly 200,000 people, and is the strongest military power now.

However, Kornilov and Nazarov refused to let Denikin command them. This guy was not a Cossack, so why could he be the leader of the Don River Army?

Kornilov looked at Nazarov, who sat at the table with confidence and asked, "General, please tell me, how many people do you have now?"

"Twenty-seven thousand people, and we also recruited about 30,000 Chinese workers to join in," Nazarov said. "The Austrians agreed to hand over to us about 100,000 captured Cossack troops."

"We held a meeting yesterday and decided to march upstream of the Don River. The goal is Chalizin. Our route of entry is..." Kornilov pointed his finger on the map, and then said: "We recommend that you unite your troops and the volunteers to march towards Chalizin together. Spread the power - this is not good for us."

"This is impossible!" Nazarov said flatly, "We need to drive the Red Guards through the Donets Ridge, and then march northward to overthrow the Soviet regime of Kharkov. Since Moscow signed a ceasefire agreement with the Austrians, they dare not send troops to cross the Ukrainian border on a large scale. We need to first eliminate the enemies in Ukraine." Nazarov rejected Kornilov's suggestion, and he finally agreed to divide the prisoners of war released by Austria and handed them over to Kornilov. The two decided to do their own things.
