Chapter 35 The Home of the Veteran

(... "I wish I could die against Japan, so I kept it as shame today" is my favorite poem in my twelve years of prison life, and it is also my deepest understanding after experiencing the entire eight years of anti-Japanese war; the best destination for soldiers is to die gloriously in a world-renowned war, because veterans are no longer needed after the war... Excerpted from "Grandpa's Memories of the War of Resistance")

"Everyone knows what you said to look for crickets, but I don't know where to look for Qu Qinzhuang..." Cao Xiaomin took crickets to pick up a commoner who said he had important information. This commoner was named Ma Dejian, who was in the same car dealer as crickets.

"That's right, sir, the Japanese occupied a few houses on the south bank of Suzhou River to monitor you..." Ma Dejian told the whole story. Because the Japanese had artillery, they dared not show off their power on the Suzhou River anymore. But they occupied several houses and secretly arranged machine gun teams to monitor them. They were afraid of being bombarded, so they would not fire the citizens who swam to the north bank to deliver supplies to the defenders, but they would catch them when the citizens returned...

"Sir, I'm here, I can't go back; Crickets can be a hero, and Alama Dejian can do it..."

Be a hero?! Cao Xiaomin smiled bitterly in his heart. Eight hundred heroes have become the heroic idol of the Chinese people. This little coachman is actually here to be a hero! Ma Dejian is not as old as Cricket and has a history of being destroyed by the Japanese. Could this young man in his early twenties make up a lie just to be a hero!?

Just when Cao Xiaomin was planning to continue interrogating Ma Dejian, Xie Jinyuan asked him to call him away.

"The British asked us to evacuate, the Chairman agreed to the British, and the Japanese also promised that we could let us retreat through the concession and join the 88th Division..." Xie Jinyuan said: "I am worried that the Japanese will use tricks to attack us with the most fierce firepower on the way to evacuate to the concession. You have many ideas, and see how you can withdraw to the concession..."

Xie Jinyuan! You are so honest! Cao Xiaomin screamed in his heart. Although he is history-blind, he has been born and raised in Shanghai and has participated in countless patriotic educations since he was a child. He still knows that the eight hundred heroes were imprisoned by foreigners after being deceived by the Japanese to the concession!

"Captain, can we trust the British? I don't think they can believe themselves. As long as the Japanese threaten them, they have to change their minds..." Cao Xiaomin was very anxious. He could not tell Xie Jinyuan the truth of history in advance. He could only think of other ways and use other reasons to convince his leader: "Captain, if you and I are Japanese, will we escape unscathed!?"...

In the evening, the order to break through had been issued. The defenders' six Type 92 infantry cannons were aimed at the three private houses directed by the Qing Gang disciples contacted by Ma Dejian on the other side through the Suzhou River, and then they waited for an order to open fire immediately.

But there was a strange atmosphere among the soldiers who were about to fight today: everyone stared at the enemy's secret stronghold opposite, but they didn't even look at the brothers next to them!

The enemy's secret stronghold is nothing but ordinary houses, with no attraction, but everyone stared at them intently - they were afraid that tears of weakness would fall when they turned their heads!

After discussion with Cao Xiaomin, Xie Jinyuan decided that he had made an appointment with the British on the phone to discuss the matter, asking the British to allow them to send several critically injured people to the concession first; and then discuss the retreat arrangements. Soon the British happily took Xie Jinyuan's withdrawal procedure on the next day, that is, on November 1st, and on the way, all of them were handed over to the British army to return to the other border of the concession.

The British were cheated! Among the wounded soldiers sent out, they were mixed with crickets and Ma Dejian, who was nicknamed "Damn" and they would wait for an opportunity to find their brothers in the Qing Gang. They would instruct the Japanese secret stronghold locations on the other side, and take advantage of the chaos to pull out the Japanese's eyeliner when the artillery fire attacked in the warehouse; then at night the breakout troops would quietly swim from the Suzhou River to the ships prepared by the Qing Gang heroes and leave Shanghai by the waterway!

There is a link in this plan, and someone must stay! Those who are seriously injured and unable to get into the water will stay. In addition, Commander Xie Jinyuan must stay because he has to deal with the British on the phone from night to the next day!

Except for Cao Xiaomin, no one knew the entire plan. They only knew how to evacuate in batches. They did not know that the beloved regiment commander would stay in the warehouse to cover everyone's evacuation! But everyone knew that the seriously injured could not evacuate.

The moment of coming finally came. "What else can be better for a heroic death in a world-renowned war? As soldiers, brothers should be happy for the old buddies!" Brothers who were seriously injured and unable to retreat said goodbye to their fellow comrades who were also crying silently, and said goodbye to their life and death. Hundreds of men, men who were once fearless on the battlefield, could not bear the tears at this moment. They hugged them tightly and shed tears silently; they knew that once they let go of their hands, they would never have the chance to see these brothers again; they did not dare to cry, just as the sound would be transmitted to the concession or the Japanese positions.

"Kill a few more Japanese in the future to avenge the old brother..." "Why are you crying? Don't be like a little wife? Which young wife from a family have you seen carrying a gun..." "Now, brother, I am a national hero this time, and this pension will not be lost no matter what..." Farewells came from the mouths of other people who died. All the soldiers who had the chance to live could no longer speak.

... "I wish I could not die against Japan, so I left it as shame today" is my favorite poem in my twelve years of prison life, and it is also my deepest understanding after the entire eight years of anti-Japanese war. The best destination for soldiers is to die gloriously in a world-renowned war, because veterans no longer need veterans after the war... Cao Xiaomin's mind was a heavy sigh of grandpa. In this story, Grandpa told a lot about how to pick up scatters after the war and begging for food to pull Cao Xiaomin's grandpa; veterans who have forgotten how to farm and don't know other business have only found that all military medals are worthless and will even become evidence of being thrown into the cell!

Maybe this is really the best destination for veterans. In a nationwide war of death, Cao Xiaomin looked at Xie Jinyuan unconsciously; the latter tried his best to signal him to move his gaze away, but Cao Xiaomin's eyes were already blurred by tears, and he didn't see it...

"Boom!" "Boom!" Six Type 92 Infantry Cannons bombarded continuously, and the three houses on the opposite side were suddenly collapsed like destruction. The smoke and dust that soared into the sky flashed in the smoke and dust... "Fight the fire! Fight the fire!..." With the shouts one after another, a large group of "people" suddenly appeared along the south bank with buckets - the Qing Gang disciples who were responding took action!

The soldiers who had already quietly crawled out of the crack in the door began to quietly slide into the river when the bombardment and firefighting on the south bank attracted everyone's attention; the artillerymen quickly dragged all the cannons to the next prepared defense position, and finally showed tears in their smiles with the wounded soldiers lying on the defense line, and the last group left.

The defense on the top floor had been withdrawn, and Xie Jinyuan was the only one on the empty high ground under the bare flagpole where the flag had fallen; he could only hide here, and he could not let the retreating brothers know that he was not among any group of retreating soldiers, and he was afraid that they would refuse to evacuate.
