One Two Five Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng
Tathagata stopped talking and looked up at the hole facing the wall facing the Bodhidharma.
This stone cave is about one meter high, and the square cave door is just open to the sun, warm in winter and cool in summer, and the air is refreshing. There is a compact small lawn in front of the cave, surrounded by thick shade and no sky. It is such a place for cultivation.
Tathagata was approaching and looked at the reincarnation and enlightenment of the Medicine Buddha, who was once aligned with him as two great Buddhas in the West! I saw that the shadow of the Patriarch Bodhidharma was printed on the wall, which was the image of the wall posture of Bodhidharma, with square head and wide eyes, curly beard, and wrinkles in his clothes, vaguely visible, like a light-colored ink painting.
Next to the image of Bodhidharma facing the wall, there is a small poem engraved by Bodhidharma after he practiced meditation on the wall. The poem says: "I was originally here to spread the Dharma and save my delusion. A flower blooms five leaves, and the fruit will naturally come true."
Tathagata pondered for a moment, pronounced the Buddha's name to the portrait of Bodhidharma, and came out of the hole!
Tathagata saw Shen Xiu, the great disciple next to the fifth ancestor Hong Ren, and said, "Namo Amitabha, Shen Xiu, now you have fully obtained the true teachings of Hong Ren, but you don't know that you will have some enlightenment in the practice of Buddhism?"
Shenxiu Tao is the Tathagata who examines himself. He pondered for a while and said, "The body is a Bodhi tree, and the heart is like a mirror platform. Wipe it frequently and do not cause dust."
Buddha Tathagata and Guanyin Bodhisattva looked at each other and noticed the bitter smile in the other person's eyes.
Tathagata's expressionless face, and just as he was about to speak, suddenly a voice came and said, "Elder Shenxiu's words are superficial and he should not understand the true meaning of Buddhism!" But on the way upstairs, a middle-aged monk in coarse cloth walked up slowly with a broom in his hand!
The monk stepped forward and bowed: "Namo Amitabha Buddha, the name of me, Huineng, is a disciple of a foreign courtyard of Shaolin Temple. He is usually responsible for cleaning the cliffs. He saw Elder Shenxiu saying something, and he couldn't help but disturb everyone's interest. Please do not be surprised!"
The so-called disciples of the outer courtyard are the names of Shaolin Temple for some miscellaneous disciples. Huineng is from Nanyue. Nanyue is a wilderness in the fashion of the Tang Dynasty. Huineng was naturally assigned to the ranks of miscellaneous disciples, responsible for the cleaning of the cliffs of Master Bodhidharma.
Huineng didn't force it. He worked on the cliff facing the wall for more than ten years. He spent the rest of his time on this cliff except for eating and sleeping every day.
Shen Xiu was arrogant and was disliked by Huineng's criticism. Lin Lei shouted immediately: "Huineng, you have been in Shaolin for more than ten years. You have been cleaning this cliff and have never heard of Buddhism. How can you blame me?"
Huineng said lightly: "The Buddha is not in his ears, not in his eyes. If he has a Buddha's heart, there is Buddhism. Although I have never entered a Buddhist temple, I have been cleaning this cliff facing the face of Master Bodhidharma every day for more than ten years, but every time I scanned it, I felt Buddhism!"
Huineng's words are exactly the same as the Zen enlightenment of "seeing the mind and realizing nature"!
Zen Buddhism was originally the Buddha of Tathagata and his disciple Kashyapa. Ruzhi understood Huineng’s meaning! Tathagata nodded slightly, and saw that Shen Xiu next to him looked disapproving.
At that moment, Tathagata said, "Huineng, since you say that Shenxiu has not been able to see the mind and understand nature, then what can you do?"
Huineng put down the broom in his hand, and said with both hands, "Dare you not following the Buddha's order?" After that, he opened his mouth and said, "There is no tree in Bodhi, and the mirror is not a platform; there is nothing in it, so where can dust be caused?"
The fifth ancestor Hongren next to him heard Huineng's words and recited it silently several times in his heart. He only sighed: "Make the pearls covered in dust and the sun and the moon flowing into fireflies, this is my Hongren's sin!"
Seeing that Hongren was acting like this, Shen Xiu was very dissatisfied and said, "You are not doing what I have done, and you should not be able to do it!" Shen Xiu's words also make some sense.
Tathagata smiled faintly when he heard this, and did not say anything. Guanyin Bodhisattva next to him saw this scene and said, "Since that's the case, I'll give you a question. How do you two answer each?"
Guanyin Bodhisattva looked up and saw that the entire Songshan Mountain scenery was almost complete, with a quiet and profound and beautiful appearance. The Shaolin River between Taishi Mountain and Shaoshi Mountain was like a white long training course, shimmering under the sun, winding through the mountains and valleys. There was a small boat on the Shaolin River, swaying left and right. A sail was hanging on the boat, fluttering in the wind.
Guanyin had an idea and said, "Namo Amitabha, can you see the wind blowing on the small newspaper, but you don't know if it's the wind or the sail?"
Shen Xiu can obtain the true teachings of the Fifth Ancestor Hongren, and is not an ordinary person. He is now a first step: "No sail will not move, no sail will not move, no wind will not move, the wind will also move, and the sail will also move!"
This answer is just right, and there is nothing outstanding, but there is no problem! The Fifth Patriarch Hong bears his heart and says that he is afraid that he will answer it himself, and he will be much more intelligent than Shenxiu. He nodded unconsciously!
But Huineng said quietly: "It is not the wind that moves, nor the sail that moves, the heart of the benevolent is moving!"
This words were like a thunderbolt in the clear sky, which shocked the Shenxiu to the point of being unable to speak. However, the Fifth Patriarch Hongren looked excited and turned around and bowed deeply to the cave facing the wall of the Patriarch Bodhidharma, saying, "The ancestor is above, and the Buddhist Zen Buddhism will eventually shine brightly on the world!"
Buddha Tathagata and Guanyin Bodhisattva looked at each other and smiled. Tathagata took out a golden Zen stick and a golden cassock from his arms. They were two of the six acquired spiritual treasures that accompanied the prosperity of Buddhism under the Taoist ancestor Hongjun's heavenly path.
Tathagata handed over the golden Zen stick and the golden cassock to Guanyin Bodhisattva, and said, "Namo Amitabha, I will trouble the Bodhisattva to go to Baima Temple in Luoyang tomorrow, so I can order Monk Chen Xuanzang to go to Chang'an to meet the King of Tang!"
In Chang'an, the Tang Dynasty's convention palace, all the civil and military officials gathered together and stood in a row. Emperor Taizong of Tang Li Shimin is holding a court meeting!
After everyone shouted for a long time and bowed, Emperor Taizong of Tang said, "Today I have something to tell you! Yesterday, when I was lunch break, the Buddha of the Tathagata in the Western Paradise entered a dream and talked about the Buddhist scriptures coming from the east. What do you think of the family?"
The national teacher Yuan Tiangang is a Taoist person. He had already made an appointment with Buddhism. He took a step forward and said: "The Buddhist teachings are full of compassion and guidance to others for goodness. Your Majesty's actions can be practiced to educate the world!"
Before Emperor Taizong of Tang could answer, a cold "hum" came from the side. Yuan Tiangang was shocked. The only one who dared to snort coldly in the court was naturally the only disciple of the Fa-rage disciple Wei Zheng.
Wei Zheng was both handsome and upright. He was famous for his persuasion. He argued many times, and even Emperor Taizong of Tang could not get out of the stage. Emperor Taizong of Tang trusted Wei Zheng very much and often said to people: "Wei Zheng is like a mirror for me!"
Wei Zheng had no good feelings for that Buddhism, so he only took one step forward and said: "Since Buddhism was introduced to the East Land, its doctrine has been biased, and it taught people to endure suffering and escape from the world. This move is really annihilation of the nature of the world. How can we teach it?"
When the ministers heard Wei Zheng's words, they nodded repeatedly and said it was. However, what Wei Zheng said was somewhat reasonable. Buddhism was introduced to Dongtu during the reign of Emperor Ming of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and later achieved a false prosperity during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. The reason was that this Buddhist doctrine was taken out of context by the people of the Southern and Northern Dynasties and was promoted as a sect that obeyed the situation.
It is precisely because Buddhism can't wait to move eastward in Buddhist scriptures, which naturally have comprehensive Buddhist teachings.
Yuan Tiangang is a Taoist after all. Taoism is now the national religion of the Tang Dynasty, so he is not willing to fight Wei Zheng for the sake of Buddhism. He retreated aside and stopped talking.
Emperor Taizong of Tang saw that all the ministers seemed to agree with Wei Zheng's intention, and thought to himself that he had promised the Buddha of Tathagata to repay the cause and effect of the Thirteen Stick Monk in Luoyang. If you don't joke, it's hard to go back on your word.
At this moment, Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty said to Li Ji: "Li Qing family, you have always been resourceful. Let's talk about it, how should I deal with this matter!"
Li Ji's original name was Xu Ji, and was given the surname Li for his military achievements! Li Ji was an old fox, so why didn't he understand the intention of Emperor Taizong of Tang? But he was unwilling to offend many ministers and immediately said, "I respect Your Majesty's intention!"
Not saying this means not saying it, Emperor Taizong of Tang was in a hurry.
However, the Confucian disciple Fang Xuanling came out and said, "Your Majesty, our Tang Dynasty, unifying the world, the people are blessed and the country is strong, which is the importance of the three realms of heaven and earth. Your Majesty is respected by all countries in the earth as the Khan of Heaven, and he should have the heart to tolerate all things! Although Buddhism has many biases, it has a long history after all. Our Tang Dynasty can preserve its essence, remove its dross, and use it for our people!"
This statement was deeply inspired by Emperor Taizong of Tang, and Emperor Taizong of Tang was overjoyed. However, Fang Xuanling said again: "However, there were many schools of thought in our Dongtu, and there were also several schools of thought that passed down from generation to generation. Your Majesty's civil and military achievements can be called the emperor of the ages. Your Majesty should also make my prosperous Tang Dynasty arrogance and spread far beyond the Dongtu!"
Emperor Taizong of Tang immediately took over the world, and was naturally spoken passionately by such spirits and styles, as if he had returned to the years of leading the generals to fight in the battlefield!
