Chapter 25: Coffin Shop
I have never had any idea about this place in Hunan.
My understanding of Hunan is mostly due to the Mango TV series that always displays some rubbish TV series and the Happy Camp that girls in the village like to watch.
Of course, there are also those zombie films I saw when I was a child, which mentioned the zombies in Xiangxi. However, when I grew up, I realized that Xiangxi refers to the western part of Hunan.
The first thing I think of is Changsha in Hunan, and I can’t say anything else, such as the Yueyang we came to this time.
Before Diao Laojin told me, I didn’t even know that Yueyang was from Hunan.
Of course, I know the place of Yueyang itself. After all, I am also a student. I have memorized the Yueyang Tower Inscriptions and other things many times. And when it comes to Yueyang, there is also the famous Dongting Lake. Although Dongting Lake itself is not limited to Yueyang, spans several cities and counties, and the area of the wheel is much larger than that of the entire Yueyang City, when it comes to the places around Dongting Lake, you will still think of Yueyang at the first time.
Of course, it doesn’t matter what kind of place Yueyang is. What’s important is why Diao Laojin brought me here.
No matter how I think about it, I can’t think of what our family has to do with Yueyang.
I have never met my mother and grandma. There are only three people in my family, my grandfather and my father, and there are no other relatives. The family hasn't been out of Majiagou a few times in so many years. If you want to say that you have relatives and friends in Hunan, I don't think it's very likely.
But now I can only take one step at a time.
When Diao Laojin and I came out of the station, it was already past 11 o'clock in the evening. It was obviously too late to go somewhere, so we found a small hotel next to the station and stayed in.
The next morning, Diao Laojin and I checked out. Diao Laojin took me to take a taxi and signed up for a place name. The driver shook his head. Diao Laojin said another one, and the driver drove the car.
The taxi walked all the way in the city, turned out from the city center, and became more and more deviant. When I began to suspect that the driver was deliberately taking us to detour, the car finally stopped in a sparsely populated old city.
The driver made a watch and when I looked at the meter, my eyelids jumped. If I hadn't made a profit for Xu's family to carry the coffin the day before yesterday, I would have probably cursed.
I paid the car in great pain. I got out of the car with Diao Laojin. There was another circle in the old city area, which made me dizzy and finally came to an old alley with bluestone on the ground.
I finally couldn't help it and asked, "Grandpa Diao, where are you going to take me?"
Diao Laojin had been walking for so long, and was not breathing, and replied in a deep voice: "Go and find a store."
The store? I looked around with some doubts. Someone would open a store in such a remote place. We have to go around for a long time to search, and customers can still find it? I’m afraid that it’s because my pants are gone. Could it be that the coffin shop is not enough?
However, when we arrived at the place, I couldn't close my mouth when I looked at the signboard.
This is a very dilapidated store, but the door is closed in broad daylight. The door is the one used to be built with a piece of board, and there are also broken couplets on it.
There is a sign hanging on the door with three big words written on it: "Dongtingxiang."
There was a plastic billboard in front of the door, with the front saying: "Coffin shroud, tailor-made."
On the back is: "Funeral leave, door-to-door service."
Damn it's really a coffin shop!
While I was still stunned, Diao Laojin had already walked up and reached out to slap the door: "Open the door! Open the door!"
After taking pictures for a long time, there was no movement. Just when I thought there was no one inside and was about to tell Diao Laojin not to take pictures, the door panel in the middle was suddenly pulled open.
A human face popped out from inside. He looked like a middle-aged man in his forties. He had no beard and had a pale face. He seemed to be no sunshine all day long. His eyebrows were tightly twisted together, and he pursed his two thin lips, expressionless face, and looked like he was bitter and revengeful.
The moment he saw Diao Laojin, a trace of surprise flashed in his eyes, but it soon disappeared. Diao Laojin smiled and said, "Xiaofeng, long time no see."
When I heard this, I almost laughed out loud. This middle-aged man is called Xiaofeng, and the contrast is really weird.
The middle-aged man named Xiaofeng nodded expressionlessly: "Uncle Diao, long time no see."
Diao Laojin looked at the middle-aged man and said, "So many years have passed, and you and this store are still the same."
The middle-aged man still had a blank expression: "Uncle Diao, is there anything you need to ask me for?"
Diao Laojin smiled and said, "Why? I haven't seen you for so long, so I won't invite me in to sit down?"
The middle-aged man was silent for a while, then removed another door panel next to him: "Uncle Diao, come in."
Diao Laojin nodded and walked in with his hands behind his back. After Diao Laojin went in, I just raised my foot to follow him when I saw the middle-aged man put the door panel back expressionlessly, and prepared to pull the first piece up, but he didn't look at me from beginning to end.
"Hey! I haven't entered yet!" I hurried up and shouted.
The middle-aged man then stopped and looked at me: "Who are you?"
I was speechless. When the middle-aged man saw that I didn't reply, he wanted to pull the door again without saying a word. I hurriedly went up and pressed the door panel: "Don't close the door, I came here with Grandpa Diao."
"Grandpa Diao?" The middle-aged man paused for a moment, turned around and asked, "Is he your grandson?"
Diao Laojin's voice came from it: "No, I wouldn't be angry to death if I had such a stupid grandson. Yiming, tell him what your surname is?"
I was stunned for a moment before speaking, "My surname is Ma, and my name is Ma Yiming."
The moment I heard my words, the middle-aged man who had been calm in his face finally showed a trace of turmoil on his face: "My last name? You are..."
Diao Laojin's voice came out again: "Yes, he is Lao Ma's grandson."
A ray of light flashed in the middle-aged man's eyes, and then he looked at me in a straight face, then let go of his hand: "Come in."
I hurriedly squeezed in and saw that it was dim inside, with no windows and no lights on. Facing the sunlight outside the door, I barely saw that the store was quite large, with two long black objects in the corner, which seemed to be a coffin.
The middle-aged man closed the door behind me, and it was completely dark inside. The middle-aged man said from behind, "Uncle Diao, what's wrong with you bringing him here?"
Diao Laojin coughed dryly and said, "Xiaofeng, can you turn on the light first? I can't see anything."
The middle-aged man was silent for a while before he spoke: "I forgot."
I was a little surprised when I heard this. This is pitch black, can I forget it even if I turn on the light?
When I turned around, I was shocked and saw that in the darkness, two lights were floating in the air, flashing towards me.
Before I could react, I heard a snap, my eyes were filled with lights, and it took a while to get used to it. When I looked at it again, I saw the middle-aged man standing there looking at me silently.
Only then did I realize that the two lights just now were the eyes of this middle-aged man in the darkness.
What's going on with this person? Why is it like a wolf, and its eyes can still shine when it is black.
I was still wondering in my heart, and saw that the middle-aged man had already walked into the store and looked at Diao Laojin without saying anything.
Diao Laojin shook his head and smiled bitterly: "You are still the same, and you don't know what kind of politeness is."
As he said that, he moved a bench and sat down by himself, and said to me, "Yiming, go and make me a cup of tea."
Before I could answer, I heard the middle-aged man look at the door behind and said to me lightly: "When you enter the side door, you will see the kitchen, there is a kettle and tea inside, and there is no hot water, you can cook it yourself."
I knew at a glance that Diao Laojin wanted to help me, but I had no choice but to respond and walked over and opened the side door.
Before entering, I looked back and saw the two of them whispering something there, but I couldn't hear it clearly.
I cursed a few words in my heart, then went into the kitchen, and ten minutes later, I walked out with two cups of tea.
"Grandpa Diao, tea."
Diao Laojin didn't know what he said to the middle-aged man. He looked happy and took the teacup and blew it. He smiled at me and said, "Yiming, we just talked about it. From now on, you can do things here."
