Chapter of the Judge (End)
Since the evening of May 13, Raymond hasn't had a good sleep for a week.
He was not worried that he would be killed by a blade popped up in a pillow or other daily necessities, but he was in a heavy mood and under great pressure.
When a person believes that what he does is right and his career makes sense, he will not do this.
All pressure will be transformed into a certain sense of accomplishment after completing some phased work, and a person's mood will be relieved at these nodes.
However, when a person finds that what he does is useless, meaningless, or even wrong, doubts about himself will make him feel uneasy, and the accumulated pressure will have nowhere to vent until the person's cognition, bottom line or mental breakdown.
Raymond is at this stage now.
Since the 13th, Lance has given him a new message every day, each involving a child missing from the Internet Ring Center and a case related to Raymond.
Unlike the "Green Case", the cases he gave later were all handled by Raymond five years after "learning to compromise", which are controversial and have cases of behind-the-scenes transactions.
The result direction of these cases, every case, is directly related to Raymond, because the role he played in those cases was the "dominate", rather than a passive choice like in the Greene case, where he almost lost.
During that period, Raymond was in a period of rapid growth in his career. He was young and proud. The high praise he received and the lawyer fees he received were increasing at a very exaggerated rate. It was only now that he realized that... it was at that time that he no longer cared about the ideas of the parties involved.
When he was still a student, Raymond felt that studying law could help people, but after becoming a famous lawyer, "people" became one of the least concerned elements in a case.
After taking over a case, he could use his own set of logic to calculate the general trial results of the case and the best solution using just the existing evidence and information.
If some cases are sure to win, they can pursue them relentlessly and strive for greater benefits; if some cases are insufficient evidence and have difficulty prosecution/defense, they will find loopholes, lead public opinion, and discuss transactions...
These solutions may be true, because Raymond is really outstanding, and his calculations have hardly failed. All his promises and predictions to the parties involved have come true.
However, he has completely ignored the feelings and choices of those "people". He regards the judgments that relate to other people's lives again and again into formulas and processes, and treats them as his own court practice class.
And he also firmly believes that his choices and actions are right until... now.
…………
May 21, 1:00 pm.
Raymond came to Lance's cell again, which was almost his daily routine in the past half month.
After sitting down, he said nothing.
"You seem to be very tired." Lance looked at Raymond, whose eyes were bloodshot and his face was thinner, and said jokingly.
"What is the message today?" Raymond didn't answer his words, but just asked weakly.
"Ha..." Lance smiled, "Do you think that when all the little devils are found, I will have no bargaining chips on my hands, and you will no longer have to get information from me?"
"Or..." Raymond whispered, "When you put all the misfortunes and tragedies that have arisen for me, this matter will come to an end, right?"
"Oh?" said Lance. "You don't care anymore?"
"Yes! I just don't care!" The next second, Raymond suddenly became furious. He raised his voice and shouted, "I'm just a sue! A scum who lives with peace of mind through self-persuasion and quibbling! How about it?" He stood up, and the veins on his forehead swelled up. He stared at those blood-filled eyes and pointed at Lance, "Do you know! A person like me will continue to live like this! And become a federal judge! And you... are not far from death!"
Lance looked at Raymond quietly. After he finished yelling, he sat down exhaustedly. Lance slowly spoke: "It seems you are under a lot of pressure..." He paused and changed his subject, "This is a good thing, which just shows that you have a conscience."
"Stop talking nonsense, what is the message today..." Raymond adjusted his breathing and asked the question he had just now, because he really didn't want to talk to Lance any more.
Although Raymond didn't know much about Lance until now, there was only one thing he could be sure of - the more he talked to, the closer he was to being driven crazy.
"You don't need to interpret today's information again. You just need to 'do as you do'." A few seconds later, Lance replied.
"Hmph...what if I refuse? Will I die of brushing my teeth?" Raymond responded bluntly.
"Haha...that won't be." Lance replied, "but you will lose the opportunity to 'retrieve the original intention'."
"Ha!" Raymond also laughed, "What are you doing? Do you think our conversation is like a withdrawal mutual aid club?"
His attitude was as expected by Lance, so Lance ignored it and just continued, "After you went out, you told them that I did not give you any information today, but proposed a deal - 'As long as they agreed to give me a real global live broadcast and a public trial, I will give everything I know... including information about the missing children, intelligence against the cross, secrets of various rebellious organizations around the world, etc., after the trial, you said, I will give them three days to consider, I will not see any visitors during these three days, and you will come to me after you discuss the final result.
"As for you... please take three days off and stay at home and wait..."
After hearing this, Raymond thought for a moment and continued, "So what you want me to do is to ask for three days off besides passing the message?"
"Yes." Lance nodded.
"Do you think I'll believe that things are really that simple?" Raymond asked again.
"Of course you won't believe it, and even if you don't believe it... Carmen won't believe it." Lance said, and showed a wretched smile again. "So, after you tell her what I said to you today and other fools, she will definitely let you use your tricks, do what I said, and then secretly monitor you... If nothing unexpected happens, in the next three days, even if you go to soak in shit, you will be closely watched by at least three Fcps surveillance personnel. But this is not important. What is important is... whether you deal with me or Carmen, you still have one way to choose unless... you hide some of what I said to you today."
"I know what you are doing... You don't need to make such an idea. I will tell you that I will not hide a word. Including the last few words you have to settle the score for me, I will also make it clear to Morino and the others." Raymond said, turning around and knocking on the prison door, and calling for the guard.
After he left the cell, Lance collapsed leisurely on the bed, looked at the ceiling, and said to himself: "There is no silver here, it's just someone like you..."
…………
On May 14, Raymond began his three-day vacation.
For safety reasons, Raymond's family and the families of several Hague bosses related to the case were all transferred to other counties a day after the death of Chief Rutte, so he was the only one in Raymond's family these days.
Yesterday, after leaving Lance's cell, Raymond did not say to others that "Lance asked me to take a vacation." In fact, he concealed all the content Lance said about letting himself rest yesterday, and only talked about the transaction, but in the end, he still asked for three days off.
Even Raymond himself couldn't explain why he did this. Perhaps it was intuition, perhaps it was rebellious, or perhaps it was Lance who gave him some psychological hints in the conversation...
But in fact, from the results, there is no difference, because Carmen still sent someone to monitor him.
For Carmen, even the message "Lance gave Raymond three days off" did not prevent her from doubting Raymond's actions.
Carmen knew from the beginning that Raymond was an extremely critical piece in this game. He seemed to be standing on the side of the Federation and had no possibility of betrayal, but if he didn't keep a close eye on it, it was hard to say what Lance would use him to do.
In addition, Raymond's mental state has indeed been not very stable in the past week, which has made Carmen pay more attention.
Just like that, two and a half days passed and nothing happened.
It was precisely because nothing happened that Carmen "invites" Raymond to the local FCP branch.
If something happened during this period, Carmen would feel more at ease, but now, she is very uneasy... She feels that not nothing has happened, but something has happened, but she has not noticed it.
So she put Raymond on a lie detector...
Carmen knew Lance so well that the first question she asked made herself fall into a trap: "Did you hide some information you got from Lance?"
Raymond could only answer "yes". After all, he was not a trained agent and he was not capable of cheating on lie detectors.
So Carmen naturally continued to ask him: "What are you hiding?"
Raymond could only tell the truth that it was Lance who asked him to do the three-day leave.
This answer was passed by the lie detector, but not by Carmen.
For Carmen, there are two doubts here: First, people need to lie for purpose, why did Raymond lie on this irrelevant matter? Second, is that nothing more? Isn't it possible? Isn't it necessary? Did he hide something else? Is this answer now? Is Lance taught him the smoke bomb used to deal with lie detectors? Or is he already possessing the ability to deceive the lie detector and can control the results at will?
Carmen fell into a logical circle. Too many assumptions and unverifiable possibilities made her reasoning ability a burden, and she completely lost her trust in Raymond.
And Raymond... As mentioned earlier, he couldn't explain why he wanted to hide that. He was already under great pressure and was worried in front of the lie detector. Finally, he inevitably became angry and nonsense, which made all his confessions unreliable.
…………
On the morning of May 17, after a night of tossing, Raymond walked out of the FCPs Netherlands branch base with his suit and tie, with a tired look on his face.
Although Carmen no longer believed him, he was the chief prosecutor of the federal government and actively cooperated with the FCP investigation. It was just because he did not explain clearly about an inconsistency and could not convict him, so they could only let him go.
Of course, the surveillance of him will continue, and this is also explained to him clearly.
However, the agents responsible for escorting him home, including Carmen, ignored one thing - from the evening of May 16 to the morning of the 17th, when Raymond was invited to the FCPs branch to "drink tea", his surveillance was interrupted.
Although the monitoring devices were still on, there was no one monitoring in front of the screen during that time.
Suppose that one or several well-prepared people came to the empty Raymond villa that night and quietly installed some hidden signal blocking and transmission and reception devices around the villa that was not monitored by anyone. What would that result?
…………
It was 2:00 p.m. that day.
Raymond finished his meal and took a shower, and was about to go to the bedroom to have a rest.
Unexpectedly, as soon as he walked into the bedroom, he saw that there was an extra person on the sofa chair he often sat on.
"Hello, Mr. Fox." It was a white man, looking in his early thirties; although he was dressed casually, he could still see his muscle profile and agile body shape.
"Why? There are so many cameras installed, and you still have to send someone to watch me directly in the room?" Raymond's first reaction was that this person must be an agent of FCPs. Because the entire villa and the toilet were under the surveillance of others, there was no blind spot. If there were irrelevant people coming in at this moment, the agents who were surveillance outside would have rushed in and arrested the person.
However, facing his question, the other party's answer was...
"The person who monitors you is currently watching the surveillance video of your bathing." The man responded slowly, "After we finish chatting, they can only see the scene in the picture of you walking out of the bathroom and coming to this bedroom a minute ago; of course, what they will see then is not the scene where I was sitting here and chatting with you, they will only see the scene of you walking into the bedroom and lying down on the bed and falling asleep...
"When I leave, as long as you really go to a sleep, our screen replacement system will automatically find a suitable editing point to connect the real-time picture of your sleep. No one will notice that I have been here."
Hearing this, Raymond's expression had changed a few times. He quickly realized that the person in front of him was not joking, and he also roughly guessed the other party's identity and position.
"Are you Lance's accomplice?" This was Raymond's first guess.
"I dare not be...I am Hull Schneider, at best, is just an errand." Hull is now completely different from the small staff living in Berlin. He is no longer the same as before, both physically and psychologically. "But you...Mr. Fox, you are different. You are a big man, you are very important."
"You don't need to tell me this. Everyone knows that I am the chief prosecutor of the Federation." Raymond replied coldly, using his light to confirm the route of turning around and running away, and was considering whether he could escape from the attack range of the man in front of him and be successfully rescued.
"But that's not the reason why you are important." Hull knew Raymond's plan, but he didn't say it out loud, but continued, "In the past half month, through Mr. Lance, you should have learned that the so-called federal prosecutors are just a group of slaves parasitized under the corrupt system...
"You go day after day to collect a bunch of evidence that you may not be able to obtain, and then run to a place full of hypocrisy and corruption and talk nonsense with a group of suits and ties, arrogant hypocrites, and by the way, you also have to please a dozen idiots who think they are important and actually aren't nonsense (—Judge Volume 13).
"Is such a person really important?"
Raymondton stopped and stared at Hull for a few seconds: "Why...why am I important?"
Hull smiled: "Because you have the ability to do better, not as a federal prosecutor, but as another...
"You can abandon the things you have long disbelief and pursue justice outside of that system.
"You can judge those who are not in charge of federal laws or cannot be controlled, and punish those who are already protected by the system, or are ignored and laissez-free because they do not threaten the system itself...
"You can become... a new system beyond the standards you know."
At this moment, Raymond felt his heart beating violently. A strong sense of excitement accompanied by fear and a trace of expectation was urging his blood to flow. He followed the other person's words and murmured: "It's like... a 'judge' in a myth?"
