Chapter 6 The Dou Family

Dou Zhao's ancestor was a peddler with no permanent property. By chance, he married the maid from a merchant in the town.[] He used the ten taels of silver he dowed by his wife to buy one acre of two cents of land in Beilou Village, Zhending, and since then he settled in Beilou Village and reproduction.

This is the origin of the famous Beilou Dou family later.

Dou Zhao's grandfather was an apprentice in the silk shop of his mother's old boss at the age of ten. He became the second shopkeeper of the silk shop at the age of fourteen and twenty. The boss wanted to marry his daughter's personal maid to him, but he didn't want his descendants to transfer their families all their lives, and wanted to marry Hao, the daughter of a scholar in Zhenxi, the poor scholar.

When he was twenty-one, he used the eight taels of silver he had saved up as a betrothal gift, married Hao, and lost the job of the second shopkeeper.

He took Hao back to Beilou Village, took over the shoulder pole that his father carried, and the 30 acres of fertile land he had been digging hard for his whole life. He farmed during busy farming and traveled to the villages during slack farming.

The following summer, Hao gave birth to a fat boy for him.

He met a cotton merchant at the entrance of the village.

Grow cotton in Zhendingfu.

The cotton harvester wanted to find someone familiar with local farmers to help him harvest cotton.

My father recommended himself. With his skills he had worked hard in a silk shop, he could tell whether the cotton was adulterated at a glance. When he held it, he could tell how much pounds of cotton was, and he could also plan to keep accounts.

After summer, in addition to the prior remuneration, the cotton collector also rewarded Dou Zhaotai’s grandfather with ten taels of silver, and agreed with him that he would come to him for help at this time next year.

In winter, Dou Zhao's grandfather traveled all over the townships of Zhending County. In the summer of the next year, which family planted a lot of cotton, whether the cotton was good or bad, and whether the cotton households were easy to deal with. It was clear that they collected cotton, weighed, settled accounts, put them in warehouses, and made accounts. The merchants just waved their fans and sat under the shade of trees to drink tea.

"It seems that it's the same if I have it or not. I have to pay for the money to stay in a hotel and eat here." The merchant smiled and discussed with Dou Zhao's grandfather, "I have an idea. I will advance part of your money first, collect the cotton yourself, and then send the collected brocade to me. We settle the money based on the advantages and disadvantages of the cotton. What do you think?"

This is the case with the Dou family, a home built by collecting cotton.

When they arrived at Dou Zhao's grandfather, the Dou family sent cotton vendors from Zhending, Huolu, Yuanji, Pingshan, Xingtang and other counties to Jiangnan, and sold them to Sichuan in Jiangnan, and then transported Sichuan medicinal materials to the capital to silver, and sold them to the high-ranking officials and nobles in Zhending Mansion.[]

Dou Zhao's grandfather only needs to study with peace of mind and get fame.

But he only passed the exam with one scholar.

But this did not prevent him from marrying Zhao Juren, the daughter of Anxiang Village, Xingtang County, next door.

The Zhao family and the Dou family are different!

They have a family tree.

Although there are only 120 acres of land in the family, their ancestors can be traced back to the period of King Mu of Zhou. Moreover, "Zhao" was a national surname from the previous dynasty. The ancestors of the Zhao family moved here from the old capital Bian Jing when the dynasty was changed.

Anxiang's Zhao family is also Dou Zhao's foreign family.

After Dou Zhao's grandfather married Zhao, he gave birth to two sons. The eldest son Dou Huancheng and the second son Dou Yaocheng.

The two brothers have been extremely intelligent since childhood. They studied with their grandfather Zhao Juren and sent them to the Imperial College in Kyoto to study.

In the 13th year of Zhide, the two brothers were nominated for the gold list at the same time.

The older brother is third in the second grade, and the younger brother is third in the second grade.

The Dou family has become truly rich and prosperous at this point.

Later, my brother passed the exam for Shujishi, stayed in the Hanlin Academy, and served as a county magistrate in the pedestrians. My younger brother was released from Jinxian County, Nanchang Prefecture, and became a county magistrate.

Dou Zhao's grandfather was very lucky. He passed away after a few years of glory.

When they died, neither brother was around.

The two brothers returned to their hometown to observe the system. After getting rid of the patriotic order, they returned to Beijing to wait for the lack of money.

My brother was a Shujishi. He had been in the pedestrian department and soon took the job as a censor of the Censorate. My brother wasted more than half a year before he took the position of the Yunnan Censorate Department under his guidance.

In my younger brother's impression, Yunnan has poor mountains and rivers, miasma, rain and smoke, and some officials died of sudden illness on the way to their posts, which is not a place for people to stay.

If they continue to stay in Kyoto, firstly, the two brothers are in the first place and may not be able to get good jobs. Secondly, the official position will be promoted every three years. When he plans to have a good job, his brother will probably be promoted to the sixth rank long ago.

The more he thought about it, the more boring he felt, so he resigned and returned to Zhending County.

Zhao's life was both decent and comfortable. If there was anything to say, it was that both sons were outside the office. She was afraid that when she died, she would not have a son to die, and she would die like an old man.

Dou Yaocheng returned to her hometown, so she was naturally very willing.[]

Anyway, the eldest son's career is going well, and the second son comes back and is just right in front of her and can help manage the family's affairs.

Dou Yaocheng, who was in charge of the Jinshi and the aura of the first grade, was naturally incomparable to the business of the ancestors of the Dou family.

The silver that was redeemed in Kyoto is no longer sold for jewelry, but is used as seal money, or for those poor Hanlin; or for those seventh-rank sesame officials who had just made an appointment with errands and needed to serve large sums of silver and buy official sesame uniforms; or for officials who returned to Beijing to report their duties and asked for gifts. Later, with the promotion and dismissal of these officials, the Dou family began to interfere in the stones of the river, the grains and grasses on the nine sides, and the salt in the Nanjiang River...

Silver poured in like water, dazzled Zhao and Dou Huancheng and were frightened.

Dou Huancheng, who is already the right assistant of the Censorate, warned his younger brother more than once: "If the moon is full, it will be deficient, and if the water is full, it will be overflowing. You should just hide your weakness."

Dou Yaocheng didn't care: "The bold ones are so brave, and the timid ones are so hungry. I'm also pretending to be a tiger. If you retire, I won't do this business."

Dou Huancheng felt that the money was not made clean: "Selling goods from south to north, and earning money is hard at least. You are like a collusion between officials and businessmen! You are making money from the national crisis!"

Dou Yaocheng sneered: "Brother thinks money is dirty at this time? Why don't my brother think money is dirty when he wants to buy Song Ke's orphans? Why don't my brother think money is dirty when he wants to support his colleagues' orphans..."

"You!" Dou Huancheng's lips were trembling with anger.

The two brothers parted in disagreement.

Zhao looked sad and advised Dou Yaocheng: "Just listen to your brother! He is in the Censorate and impeached Baisi. If he sees a lot, he will not harm you."

Dou Yaocheng didn't want his mother to worry, and he was unwilling to bow to his elder brother, and said casually: "Look at those officials, who don't compete to flatter? There is no need to speak up. Someone will send food, drinks and money, but he is afraid that he will not be charged if he gives it. I am different from my elder brother. I can't make money a day and I don't have food in a day."

Zhao heard it and laughed and said, "You think your mother is old and confused." He thought in his heart that his eldest son only had that little salary. Every time he came back, he was either filial to her ginseng bird's nest or jewelry. The daughter-in-law and grandchildren of the eldest house had new clothes and jewelry every year. It can be seen that life was indeed very good. The eldest son's words made sense, but the younger son's business was not easy. Last time he went to Songjiang Mansion, in order to socialize those officials, he felt uncomfortable when he smelled the smell of alcohol. That's it. The youngest son never kept the money he disliked, and all the money he had left was paid to the public and middle school, and all the benefits were equally divided with the eldest son.

Thinking of this, I felt pity for my younger son.

It is different from those who have an official body and no official body.

Otherwise, why would people in this world be officials after their heads were squeezed out?

The old lady's heart turned to this young son who cares about her every day.

Dou Yaocheng cut off his career and helped his business with the help of a capable manager. He became bigger and bigger and more prosperous. His mind gradually focused on enjoyment.

At first, I just called my friends and drank and talked about it. Later, I started listening to opera in the Liyuan Garden and riding on the Zhangtai.

Zhao learned about it and advised his youngest son: "You are a person with status. How can you drink at the same table with those women who sell peddlers? Why not buy a few smart little girls and come back, invite famous actors from Zhending Mansion to train them, and raise a troupe by yourself. They have the face and can relieve boredom, and can be lively during festivals."

With his mother's words, what else should Dou Yaocheng have to worry about?

He played more and more ridiculously.

The differences between the two brothers are getting deeper and deeper.

Seeing that this was not possible, Zhao asked his parents' brother to come up with an idea.

Uncle Zhao thought for a while and said, "Brother, settle the accounts clearly. Why not divide the family while you are here? Everyone has their own hands, so there is nothing to say."

Zhao thought for a long time and made up his mind: "It's better than making a joke about uneven distribution after I die. I have been blamed for the infamy of the family. Anyway, I am already half a person who has entered the country." Then he called his eldest son back: "...Don't argue about these trivial matters!"

"Mother, this is not a trivial matter." Dou Huancheng disagreed with the separation of the family and tried to convince his mother, "The career is prosperous for a while, and the article is good. The foundation of a family life is not entirely about career development, and the family style is indispensable. If you have career, but no family style, you can keep your original heart and not be confused by being indulged in luxury. If you can't keep it, and you will suddenly fall into a good life, it will be even more miserable than that ordinary family; if you have family style, but no career, you will act upright, be honest, and don't dare to get rid of bad trends and evil spirits, you will have a blessing. This is what my uncle's family is..."

"I know, I know." Zhao said perfunctorily, "I want to split the family. I don't want to see you continue to make trouble like this anymore. Especially your brother, who ended up like this after ten years of hard work. If you brothers are in a relationship, who will take care of him? But this brother is like a couple, who is injured day after day, year after year, and no matter how good the relationship is, you can't stand it. Just treat it as filial to me and divide the family."

Dou Huancheng swore in front of his mother: "I will definitely take good care of my younger brother. There is no need to separate the family..."

Zhao shook his head: "Listen to me. Although your father left behind thousands of wealth, it is less than one-third of the current wealth of the Dou family. I want to divide the property in the family into three, one for me, one for you, one for your brother. I will follow your brother and wait for me to leave my one for you..."

Is this about dividing the family? Or is it about dividing the property?

Does this mean mother? Or does the younger brother mean?

Dou Huancheng didn't dare to think too much, so he nodded.

Zhao asked Uncle Zhao, the county magistrate of Zhending County at that time, and the two wives' parents' families were together and divided the family.

Since his mother followed his younger brother, Dou Huancheng gave up his mansion in Zhending County and built a five-in-a-century blue brick house on the east side of the county town.

From then on, the Dou family was divided into two.

The Dou Huancheng branch was called "East Dou" because he lived in the east of the city. The Dou Yaocheng branch was called "East Dou" because he lived in the west of the city.

Dou Yaocheng is Dou Zhao's great-grandfather.

As Dou Huancheng was worried, a few years later, Dou Yaocheng's wife and concubines competed for favor, causing a murder case, and also involved a lot of dirt in the inner courtyard. Although it was suppressed, the branch of Xi Dou damaged its vitality. Dou Yaocheng died of illness in less than 40 years, and his descendants were successively zero, and only Dou Zhao's grandfather Dou Duo survived.

"Dong Dou" is prosperous.

Dou Huancheng had two sons and three daughters. Nine grandsons, three granddaughters, eleven grandsons, and nine granddaughters. Two of them were sons and one son-in-law, all of whom were awarded the Jinshi.

He did not forget his promise in front of his mother and always took good care of Dou Yaocheng's branch.

After Dou Yaocheng passed away, Dou Huancheng brought the young Dou Duo to his side, helped Dou Duo manage his family property, taught him to study and go to school. After watching him get married and start a business, he handed over the family property to Dou Duo exactly. After his death, he left a will: "East and East Dou are one family, and they are separated from each other, and they are not divided."

Dou Duo had a deeper impression of his uncle than his father. He regarded Dou Huancheng as his father and was like brothers with his cousins. After his son Dou Shiying was born, he arranged the order with brothers from the Dou family in the East Mansion to show that the two families are like a family and will never distinguish them.

Therefore, although Dou Zhao's father was the only son, he was called Qiye.

The one who is called the Third Master is Dou Shibang, the eldest son of Dou Zhao's second uncle.
